Engine balancing

What components are required for complete engine balancing?

Does anyone ever balance the top end as well?

The whole rotating assembly is balanced, which comprises, the flywheel, crank, rods and pistons.

You don't balance the top end, as there is no point in balancing camshafts.

Probably worth either balancing or replacing (with a lighter one) the crank pulley while you're at it.

I've had a lightened one before, didn't do me any favours and it was missing the harmonic balancer.

Going to stick to the standard crank pulley.

I have one of these alloy ones on my engine, i have a sneaky suspicion that once the car is actually on the road this pulley will be more trouble than its worth.

For starters when my cambelt snapped, I couldn't get it off.

The key slot wasn't particularly strong either.

It had basically melted to the end of the crank. It came off via a chisel which in turn damaged the end of my crank which I had to have sleeved.

It went in the bin ages ago. I thought it was a bargain for £75 with the alternator pulley, PAS AE86 pulley, water pump pulley and the crank. No, no it was not.

you can (and should) also balance the clutch plate with the engine ...
Balance it without and then with .... on the second pass (with) material removal should only take place in the clutch plate
