stock internals boost ability

Post by hjscmh »

Has anyone tested the ability of the stock rev2 turbo to see what psi it can run at safely without modification? My engine is pretty much stock asides from an after market intercooler and induction, but i would like to get a boost controller and push it a little bit.

Anyone had any experience?

1 bar / 14.5psi or 1.2bar / 17.4 if you do metal headgasket

there are no power gains to be had going above 1 bar on a stock rev2, the ecu and fuel system would need to be upgraded to go above 1 bar

I drove my usdm gen2 with 17 psi for years. No metal HG no upgraded fuel system.

The important thing is to have the engine properly serviced beforehand. That involved me changing all pumps, flushing the cooling system, making sure the fuel system is clean and that injectors flowing cleanly and always filling up with at least 98 octane fuel.

I switched to a CT20b and run ~14PSI. I've been warned many times that on stock Rev 2 fueling / ECU it's not worth going above due to the headgasket and detonation. As I plan on upgrading all of this over the coming years I'll be waiting before turning up the boost.

I bought a wideband gauge , fuelling is so fine 10.0 afr on boost up to 17 psi ... fuel is fine chap hg is another matter 8-[ .. mines ecu for the record rev2

Check out turbonoz thread. 480bhp on stock internals and stock rev2 head gasket. Worth a read although he couldn't accept it would obviously let go at some point which it inevitably did. Deffo a testament to the stock engine though!

I'm running mine at 18PSI with a hybrid CT20b, ATS SMIC and standalone ECU. AFR is 12:1 at redline but that's at 100% duty cycle on the injectors.

That is a ticking time bomb. 100% duty? Jesus. Anything past 85% is starting to walk on eggshells. Hope you've got injectors and ecu on the list pretty pronto....
