Alloys sizes

What is the maximum size you can get on the fronts of a MK2 with stock suspension? I have found a set of alloys that I love, but the smallest they do for the fronts are 17x8 and 17x9 for the rear.

I personally wouldn't go any wider than 17x8 front and 17x9 rear.

I've 17x8 and 17x9 on my car, offset 38. That size and offset suits the car perfectly.

Any wider/lower offsets and you're into problems with handling, full lock, front strut cup/wheel interference, rear arch roll etc etc.

My set up:

17x8 ET38 front 215/40/17 tyre
17x9 ET38 rear 245/40/17 tyre

Lowered 30mm, on Apex springs/ohlins struts with no need to roll the rear arches, and have no tyre rubbing issues or when on full lock.

I have 17x8 et35 (front) and 17x9 et35 (rear) going on our 2 soon together with oem struts

Currently has 17x9 rear et38 (but with coilovers) ad needed a rear arch roll. And scrubs occasionally on bumpy roads

Cheers for quick replies guys! So my car has stock suspension on (rev5) and I have no plans at all in changing this or lowering the car. Would the above alloys fit ok? 17x8 fronts and 17x9 rears, with an ET of 35. I'm guessing a smaller tyre on the front, perhaps a 215/40 and then 245s on the rear..? I won't get any rubbing then will I?

IIRC, When I last bought tyres I bought 215/40/17 and 245/35/17 which kept the speedo accurate too

Currently have a 40 profile tyre on my wheels and personally hate it, feels like I'm driving on balloons and too wallowy for me

So IF I did get a bit of rubbing with 40s, I could get some 30s on there and that would correct it right? I'm not so good with tyre sizess lol

ET35 sticks out 3 mm further than ET38.

Stock MK2 offset is ET45. Higher the offset, the further in the arches they are.

I wouldn't go any lower than 40 profile. The ride quality will suffer.

there used to be a mr2 specific wheel/tyre size calculator that would let you know of fender issues with stock suspension, but the above will help match things up with tyre sizes whatever size you end up getting!

Being an older person now, I prefer the stock suspension so am swapping my suspension back to oem struts and 245 tyres on 17x9 et38

I never had rubbing on 245's tyres. But for me personally I prefer the ride on 35 profile but you will get a lot more choice on 40 profile and more brands

Think I got it now, cheers mate. So basically I can do:

215/40s with the 17x8s with ET35 for fronts
245/40s with the 17x9s with ET38 for rears

I wouldn't go any lower than 40 profile. The ride quality will suffer.

I've always had 40s as I prefer the comfort and also the look of the chunkier tyres. I've never really been a fan of low profile tyres.

Common setups

16x7 ET35 205/45/16 front
16x8 ET38 225/45/16 or 245/45/16 back

17x7 ET35 205/40/17 or 215/40/17 front
17x8 ET35 235/40/17 or 245/35/17 or 245/40/17 back

(since recently changing my rear tyres from 245/35/17's to 245/40/17's the ride is less harsh, but i did need to raise the rear coilovers approx 10mm to stop the tyres rubbing)

17x7.5 ET35 215/40/17 front
17x8.5 ET35 245/35/17 back

17x8 ET35 215/40/17 front
17x9 ET35-ET38 245/35/17 or 245/40/17 or 255/40/17(may rub the arches depending on offset and ride height) back

The wider the wheels/tyres you fit the more you need to pay attention to the offset. As with the wrong offsets you will have problems with the wheels/tyres rubbing on the suspension (offset too high) or rubbing on the outer arch (offset too low)

I'm thinking about these. Lovely TE37 look, and concave slightly which is what I like.

I was thinking of going for:

Fronts: 17x8 ET35 5x100/114 Bronze
Rears: 17x9 ET35 5x100/114 Bronze


Would these be fine on stock suspension with no arch rolling?

I didn't know the difference between 100/114 and 114/120. I'm guessing both would fit the MR2 as they both have 114 pattern? I also noticed that the bottom few wheels on that website had 114,3 listed. HELP.

God dammit, I think you've changed my mind from JR3 to JR12 now too. I'm loving the look of them. Did you need to get them larger on the rears so that the dish was bigger on the back compared to the fronts? ET and diameter would be much appreciated. I want 17" ideally too.

Cheers Nick. According to that size, 17x8 and 17x9 should fit nicely with ET35 and stock suspension. I also have a Toms Kit, so the rear arch looks bigger anyway.

Can anyone confirm before I think about buying them?
