They make you feel special but I found the same issue as I had with my old gt4 and that's there too competent at sensible speeds, you needed to be into triple figures before it feels like your really using it, at 60-90 it felt no different to a decent eurowagon like a 330ci etc.

My gt4 gave me the same feeling ... to safe for enjoyment 8-[

Thanks guys, some really good comments there.

To be honest I'm remembering the saying "never meet your heroes"

What are my long term options for the mr2 with estimated costs? If I was to keep it and plumb 1-2k into it each year.

E.g aftermarket ECU + mapping (how much would this set me back)

After market turbo?

Forged engine?

Depending on the health of the rest of the car I'd be spending on maintenance - calipers, springs/shocks/sills, pads/hoses, bushes, rollbars and then geometry and tyres. Unless you're dead set on going some way over 300bhp, the standard engine will do you fine if it's well looked after, you won't need to change the ECU or the turbo.

What does add up is maintaining the bits that keep it on the black stuff.

And I don't regret it.

Modded R34 gtr's yesterday at the pod where running 14s!
You really need something in the 450hp+ area to 'feel' fast.

Personally I should have got a nice nsx. Maybe I wouldn't be back in a mr2 :eye:

Skylines are big heavy and bulky. Nissan quality is not the same as Toyotas. Seating position doesn't make you feel like your in something special.
Lots of plastics
They don't feel particularly sporty what so ever. I didn't have much luck with mine, oiling and turbo problems. 3 blown engines in a year. Few options for specialists who charge a 'Gtr' tax. Not cheap by any means.

They are not a car for uk country b roads IMO. Probably great in the US or Canada, but our small roads are not suited.

It takes a lot of work to get the rb26 reliable IMO. steel turbos. Crank collar (engine out work), oil pump (engine out). Engine management to remove afm's. Basically engine needs to come out for any work to make it reliable IMO. £600-1000 for an uprated oil pump gives you some idea.
Turbos are a nightmare to remove, double of everything, vac and oil lines.

Visually mine was awesome, but in the end I didn't trust it and I grew to hate it given the problems I had.

Street cred factor is only reason to get one. It doesn't excite like the mr2.

Wow Jim, didn't know you had so many problems with your R32. I thought you just got bored of it and was too heavy/big for your style of driving

It was the latter and faith of reliability, I didn't have enough time in it to get bored. In the 12months I owned it it was maybe in my pocession for 4/5 months. And 3 of those was running it in from an expensive forged rebuild.
Real shame.

Though you are in something special. You only feel that way because of the fact it's a 'gtr'. If your coming from an Evo or scooby you see it as an upgrade given the similar driving position, but from a low car and fitted seating position of the mr2, not so much in terms of driving experience. Just my opinion in that short time.

I've happily been slaying away all skylines on the strip except r35s with a bolt on mr2!
Makes me feel better. Lol.

Had I wished it did me well, sure, but wasn't to be.

Currently waiting on a lotto win for the brand new nsx!

The thing to remember with skylines is that they weren't built from the ground up as sports cars. They came in saloon and estate guise as well. When I was in Tokyo I didn't see any coupes just saloons. No big bodykits or wheels, just standard family saloons. (I was probably in the wrong part of Tokyo lol)

But all generations of mr2 have been designed as sports cars so the size and handling will reflect that

But with this in mind I thought my r33 was great on B roads. Maybe cos my expectations weren't high before I got in

Never had a Skyline, but when I had an Evo 8.... I think it lasted 2 months before I sold it. No issues, and it was running 365hp, but god damn it was boring! Steering was far too responsive and cornering was about as much fun as Susan Boyle sat on your face. I LOVE seeing an R34 drive past, they're stunning, but me personally, I'd feel like I was driving it for other peoples pleasure than my own. The MR2 is just fun, and the reliability is excellent. :thumleft:

This x100. This is exactly how I feel. I am absolutely dying for someone in my club to buy one so I can drive beside one... But there's nay chance I'm going to drive one myself.

If you guys love the skyline why would you not want one purely for cost or unreliability myths? Im not having a go or anything, just why would you not have one? The R34 is a stunning looking car though.

I get what they mean. There's some cars I love to look at but they're not "me", don't fancy owning one

Supra for example. Love them but dont desire owning one

DR30 looks pretty f'kin sweet and was neglected for years but once it passed that magical point where looking "dated" suddenly became looking "retro" prices went ridiculous. You couldn't give them away in Japan but now you're looking at £10k+ OTR if you import one yourself. There are a couple of really sweet SR20 conversions stateside.
