[Mk2] [Turbo] Start Up Issue ( Video Attached )

Post by JLW »

Hi Guys

Went to go and start the car last night and it made this horrible noise like the starter motor was not engaging and spinning over. The car has recently been garaged to kept out of the cold. However I have noticed that the last two times starting it, it took a few seconds on the key to engage.

This is very unusual as most of the time it starts immediately. The only thing that makes me think its the battery / alternator is that the windows seemed to have very little power to do up, and the passenger side couldn't even make it to the top !

Also the headlights were very slow to pop up on ignition.
Any ideas what this could be, Im guessing flat battery, just never heard that noise before !

Its recently had a second hand starter motor fitted by LUKE @ Pacific Works.

thanks,

jordan.

Yep that is battery too flat. It has enough energy to throw the starter cog but not enough to actually turn the engine over

More along the lines of 'might be a good idea to check why the alternator isn't charging the battery'. But you wrote that the car has been in storage for a while so I would suggest that the battery isn't up to par.

yeah its been sat in the garage without being driven for a month now, its been started up once a week however. but thats clearly not enough juice for the battery. going to take it to the local auto electrical specialist to get it checked.

You'll probably find the battery is past its best. Mine will be fine for a month and still start, even with the alarm set out on my frosty drive

Can't comment on which is the best. I always buy a branded battery and this one is a bosch blue top. Not their best and read a post somewhere about halfords stopping stocking them due to returns but mine has been pucka for 5 years.
Every now and then (twice in the last 5 years) I have whipped it out and given it a conditioning charge.
People say the genuine Toyota batteries are good and reasonably priced too

i would not assume that its anything to do with your battery i would look more into spark and fuel first ...

If you're going to be leaving it sitting for weeks/months at a time, leave it on a maintenance charger like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/CTEK-MXS-5-0-Te ... B00FC42HAA

Will save you money in the long run as you won't be replacing as many dead batteries.

Hi Buddy

its all sorted now, I bought a new Bosch S4 battery and it started first time no issue, however my garage is completely isolated from any power source so a maintenance charger is practically useless.

it will be used much more regularly now the weather is improving.

Glad it's sorted.

If the car is going to be sat for months and you know you won't need to move it, then remove the battery and plug it into one of those :thumleft:

I have the same problem with car sitting and battery issues. Here's what I've learnt

A week or so just disconnect the negative terminal.

More than 2 weeks take the battery out and in the house.
When you're ready to use the car, charge the battery over night with a AC battery charger.

This way there's no strain on the alternator when you put it back in and it might be flat.

One more important thing. NEVER store a battery on concrete or metal. The battery will discharge itself. ALWAYS put it onto of a plak of wood.

I would invest in a good battery charger (not those battery packs imo) I paid £70 for mine on '07 and it's more than paid for itself. It can charge any dead car battery in less and 5 mins if you select fast charge.

Only down side is, only works with AC ie need to be plugged into the mains. Won't matter if you take your battery in the house.
