Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Replacing the front discs and pads this week, going with Toyota discs and priced up Toyota pads too.
The front pads come in at £56, so the question is, should I get them or get EBC, or Carbotech, or something else?
I know it's been covered many times before so apologies, I can't get Porterfields as I need to change them this week so they're out the question. What would be the second best pad behind them for fast road/daily use?
Thaaaaaanks
OEM pads are very good on the road, they work well from cold, give good bite and no noise (even without anti squeal shims fitted). I'm running freshly overhauled stock calipers, OEM pads (without shims), braided lines, Motul RBF600 fluid and a Cusco brake master cylinder stopper, the pedal feel is very firm and the brakes will easily stop the car on it's nose from silly speeds.
I wouldn't touch any pads made by EBC.
xp6's for the street .. thats what i had and they were amazing
They bite hard cold and bite hard mega hot .. perfect for the street
Xp8 could lose you performance on the street they need to be much hotter to be effective .. more of a semi track pad iirr
Honestly the oem pads are pretty damn good for most cars on the street.
I like the carbotechs but i'm gonna look for an alternative on the street because the amount of dust they generate is ridiculous.
tempted to get a set of porterfield r4-s and just swap the xp8's back on for trackdays
The dust is worth it. For me anyways.
Obviously they're not for everyone.
Nothing wrong with OEM pads. I had them on my car for years before changing to Carbotech.

I've got carbotechs xp8s.
Yes they are very dusty....
Yes they are very squeaky.....
Yes they can be expensive.....
But they are bloody awesome!!!
Cold are brilliant but hot are even better.
I drive all manor of cars old and new and the brakes on my turbo are the best I have come across in over 18yrs plus of driving.

Had xp6's and they did the above .. carbotech , for the driver .. trust me
Loads of great responses in here!
Thanks very much for sharing your experience, I'll get the OEM pads from my man at Toyota and look into the XP6/8's for my next change, anyone have experience of the Carbotech versus the Porterfield item?
Again, apologies for covering old ground but people always seem happy to talk about their experience with different brakes.
Thanks again
Interesting, as it's not the first time I've heard this. I've run Red stuff all round (which I preferred) and now I have yellowstuff all round with a Wilwood Big Brake kit upfront, master cylinder stopper and HEL braided lines on all corners and they are fine.
There again, I get a little brake travel despite the system being vacuum bled but that's nothing to do with the pads which is why I can't be more committed Yellowstuff. I may just take the plunge when these need replacing so I can be a bit more objective and try OEM or XP6/Panther plus or better still Porterfields just to see the difference.
