Undersealing and Waxoyl

Post by AdamMR2 »

Is this something that i can do by myself?

Wondering how difficult it is.

Is there a guide for this?

Pop the car up to Luke at Pacific works. He done an absolute stellar job on mine and its so neat. Actually I think Nick did it, but all the guys there are great.

Think it was about £200 which isn't much more than materials. Very recommended for a horrid job if you haven't got a ramp

Yeah, luke used same stuff he did on his car - not fully perm sticky waxoyl but a better finishing dry finish. Will easily outlive the car and will last 10 years plus. I'll get some pics of the finish if anyone wants

Hopefully any surface corrosion is removed and treated before under-sealing otherwise you are just sealing a problem in.

If the £200 job includes this then I am impressed - it has taken me days just to deal with the 4 arch areas and I have taken all 4 struts off as there was light surface corrosion on the underside of the strut towers concealed by the top mounts.

This job has to be done thoroughly and this is why I have:

1/ Degreased the area with bike chain foaming degreaser, hosed off and left to dry for 24 hours.

2/ Removed surface rust and then rust converted the area with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80.

3/ Top coated with epoxy mastic paint.

Only then would I apply underseal.....

Yeah all areas were washed and cleaned up.

It may have been more as I had a whole lot of work done, but even for 300 I'd still say worth it. To be frank I'm amazed its not done on import

Agreed - imports really need protection, if they haven't already been done and have been used in all weathers for 10 years in the UK they will be ropey most likely!

Unersealing

Have read somewhere that Rev 4/5 were built as World cars around 1997 onwards, rather than specific market production types, so underbody protection became normal to most/all manufacturers.
Once the competition go this route its join in or get left behind.

imo underseal is cheap but inefective way to keep the underside rust free ....
yearly i coat the underside in fluidfilm products I use fluid film liquid AR on the bits i can reach with a brush and on box sections and all other area I use fluidfilm AS...ive had my 95 rev3 tubby 8 years now and it still totally rust free another great product for spraying into box section , linkages , hinges and in and around the engine is a product called ACF 50 amazing stuff

AC50 , great on bikes. It sort of has a capillary action so gets everywhere. Expensive though. :thumleft:

Middle-man importers sometimes do this as part of their package but obviously aren't very meticulous about it so can actually just spaff a load of underseal on over all kinds of dirt and surface rust, but you'd never know it because once you see the car all you see is a nice clean layer of underseal on everything. The old adage about doing things yourself is applicable here, I suppose :)

This is a job I need to do on ours! I've got a large tin of clear waxoyl at the ready! Suppose at least with the Mr2's you don't have to worry about working around and exhaust or a propshaft down the middle of the body :)
