Power steering issue :/

Post by TheDockter »

Powerm steering on my rev1 turbo has never worked properly... Its on for maybe 40 seconds when I first turn the car on but then goes off? I changed the abs fuse because this had blown and i read somewhere they were connected? I also swapped the relay from my donor car (i know the power steering works properly on that), i tried the bypass trick aswell and that just turnned my p/s light on and it never came on for the 40secs

so what else could be wrong?

Thanks

I had this happen ... relay worked fine but ps used to cutout .. to fix i removed the relay, 2 bolts iirr .. used my dremel to clean up the contact points (even though they were a nice shinny gold colour) .. cleaned up the relay connectors for good measure , then reattached them.

Worked fine for 5 years after that :thumleft:

You can just bypass the relay completely put both connectors on the same pole.

I tried this mate, it didnt work... Just turned it off completely and put the p/s light on... ?

Cleaning the connections didnt work either unfortunately , just did that sanded em all down... Connected it all back up still 40 seconds worth of p/s and off??

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Cheers

That really unfortunate mate .. i dont have an mr2 at the mo so cant go out and do testing .. if you know your way round a mulimeter i would suggest continuity checking all the wired circuits till you find the brake (testing 12v lives and grounds too)

Wish i could be more help :(

If you cant find a brake ps ecu might be woth looking at .

If you bypassed the relay and it through up the p/s light like Pete said do an error code test .

Could be the brushes in the electric drive motor
Ps ecu gives a code when they wear down low
You can unscrew the brushes and check them quite easy

PSCT is a good call... I cut mine when I did an ECU transplant. But first port of call must be a diagnostic code. Unlike the engine ECU, the PAS ECu does not store codes, so you can only take the code when the PAS has failed and before you turn off the ignition. Of course if your PAS fails consistently then that's not an issue! :thumleft:

I had an issue with my power steering a few months ago like this...however mine wouldn't throw a light on. Mine was the power steering ecu in the end.

Hope you get it sorted mate, if you need a PS ECU or Driver then I have spares here.
