Would you torque up oil pump bolts? I'm umming and rrr-ing about that at the moment...

Provided you know the correct setting & also provided your wrench is capable of being set down to a low enough setting, then the answer is simple

YES :D

You have gone off topic with this though [-X

I wasn't asking you Peter, I was asking Paul.

Last time I torqued up an oil pump bolt, the xxx sheared and I had to have it removed.

Personally no i wouldn't torque an oil pump bolt, i've been building engines all my life and i know when a bolt is tight and when it isn't.

I have £800 worth of Snap on digital torque wrenches that i use daily on important things like bottom ends, headbolts, crank pulley, cam pulley and cam carrier caps, everything else gets nipped tight, i have done up tens of thousands of engine bolts in my time, i think i know what i'm doing.

Each to their own i guess, in my opinion Toyota give torque settings for everything (even ridiculous things) to account for the inept out there not doing something up properly, but it certainly isn't gospel.

Peter is Peter and always will be, there is no reasoning with him.

I haven't done thousands of bolts in my short, non-professional car enthusiasm career, so I am using my torque wrenches almost every time IF:

a.) those bolts & nuts have their torque specified
b.) those bolts & nuts are accessible with socket and a tq wrench

The point is, not everyone is a superstar and until my untrained wrist becomes a torque wrench, I need a good reference and practice.

I appreciate that Stenky but even to a layman, a tight bolt is a tight bolt and a slack one .... well.....isn't, Toyota specify torques for some things that really do not require a specific torque, such as a dizzy bolt, because people are basically stupid and will mess things up.

I'm happy to be told why a distributor bolt needs 20nm applied to it as opposed to just being tight which would be 20nm onwards..... my point being the same bolt at 30nm doesn't mean anything, nothing bad will happen.

So go on Peter, what is the negative effect of setting those bolts to 30nm? Or even 40nm?

This is utter bull$h1t.

Surely you should of started another thread, ?

I don't think hijacking this thread and then being rude is on tbh, in fact I think that the response to Peter's fairly innocent question has been pretty disgraceful,

If I was a new member browsing the forum I would think, screw this you get hammered here, just for asking questions.

I think a mod should edit this thread.

I believe, Toyota specifies torque for most bolts so people don't overdo them and strip the thread. Especially in aluminium parts where one needs to be extra careful.. I know it's obvious but one thing that isn't obvious is, people think, the tighter the bolt the more dynamic load it can withstand. None of which is true. So peeps overtighten the bolts thinking it's super safe, which it isn't, risking damaged threads.

The best of it. I think I know the theory of static and dynamic fasteners' load, do's and don'ts but still feel A LOT SAFER doing another 15 degree fee hand turn on bolts I thought were OK :D it's completely psychological

The OP asked for an easier way to torque a dizzy bolt than using a torque wrench that he had already torqued that didn't even require torqueing in the first place, sorry that's crazy.

I then gave him the advice that these bolts are fine just nipped up, that was not acceptable, but my advice never is for Peter.

I then gave him a proceedure using a simple spanner and hanging scales for easy access and even worked out the amount of load he needs to apply to get 20nm in a confined area..... still not acceptable, and was met with ridicule.

Personally i think he starts stupid threads like this purely for conflict, despite his decades of working on cars he needs a thread on a Mk1 forum to tighten a distributor bolt?

Please.

Here we are again

Another snipe endlessly at Peter & blame it all on Peter thread :?

The sniping coming predominantly from one source

All I wanted to know in the first place is whether there is a method of torqueing down the distributer on a Mk1 without taking the cap off

Seems not then :-k

I gave you a solution, you weren't happy with it.

You never take advice and do your own thing regardless, so the question needs to be asked, why post in the first place?

You are beyond rational help and i won't be posting on any of your threads if you genuinely feel picked on, that is all in your head.

Good day sir.

Your so called "solution" is totally impracticable as you should know perfectly well

If not then I will put you straight

One member who has spoken a great deal of sense on this thread is Chris (Oukie)

What will a prospective new member think, reading all your rantings :?:

The abuse you have hurled toward me is appalling, calling me all names under the sun :(

Not one of those quotes are me calling you names!

If you think that's name calling then i'm sorry, but i speak my mind and this entire thread is a farce, to me it's a joke even talking about torqueing a dizzy bolt, but whatever.
