Ok, here's the pics.
I'm starting to think my coil packs the problem, hence why the hotter plugs ran the engine nut the iridium did nothing, trying to order one for tomorrow.

Unreal offer...judging by what said about my compression figures I might be seeing him yet!!

Update -
New ignition coils in. Cars still not starting. Sounds the same as before.
Looks like engine rebuild is due. The misses will kill me!

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
Just pulled crank bolt out to ensure its TDC 0deg while the cam pulleys line up. It's all bang on.
Got a Toyota master tech who'll verify what it's needing.

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
I can't see the timing mark on the crank pulley, does that align with the 0 on the cover?
Have the cam pulleys been off? ie removed from the cams? If so are the cams pegged onto the centre slot of the pulleys?
If all else fails my offer still stands

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
Hey Paul, yeah the crank pulley lines up mate, double checked it tonight.
I've never removed the cam pulleys, so they'll be ok.
lol, big man if my rings are pumped and your up for rebuilding my engine I'll head down for tomorrow!!!
Seriously though its starting to look like your suspicion about the low compression is the issue.
No idea how I'm going to get this engine out on a stone driveway...

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
Knowing how many people including garages get the cam timing wrong (due to the angle of the engine), check your cam timing by using the factory assembly marks.
Remove cam cover. Look carefully at the no.1 cam bearing caps. You'll see an indent in each one. At TDC you'll also see matching marks in the cams. They should be aligned.

Evening Peter, will pap the rocker cover off tomorrow and quadruple check this. Gd wee tip there cheers.
Started pricing up my rings and gaskets etc, it's not too pricey but trust me no-one would be happier if I got the timing wrong than me, ha!
Been reading your Noble thread btw, some great insights into building a strong, reliable car, really enjoy it!
Ultimately I want this MR2 as a daily driver so I want it both solid and reliable aswell as quick.
Off to smash the Gym!

Turns out the pulleys and internal cam marks all line up.
Rings pumped then?

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
Redo the compression test twice, do the first cylinder record the figure, remove the compression tester then put a teaspoon of oil in the spark plug hole then repeat the test on that cylinder.
if the rings are shot the small amount of oil will temporarily seal the cylinder and you should get a higher reading. Repeat for the other 3 cylinders.
Personally id find it unlikely all 4 sets of rings are gone together.

Cheers mate, great wee tip
Will jump out and try that just now.
Starting to gather that all my cylinders being quite uniform is a bit strange...

Are you doing the compression test with the throttle wide open?

I haven't been mate no, that wasn't on the instructions of the tester I bought but I read on another forum about someone holding the throttle open when testing so I asked a mechanic friend if I should redo it and he said, no it wouldn't make much difference.
Does it make a difference...?

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
it will make a difference but not enough to worry about right now. the figures with oil in look alot more like they should, number 4 was the tester definitely in correctly and not leaking or anything?
Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
Fair enough.
I took no 4 out and cleaned the oil that was in the valve and the battery was dying but I did try it twice. Going to do it again in 20mins.

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
I would try it with the throttle fully open as that is the correct way to do it.

Re: Any MR2 Turbo Specialists in Scotland?
So back to basics.
Have you seen a spark at the plugs? Are you using new copper plugs?
Fuel pump is running when cranking? 12V+VE at injectors?
ECU error codes?
