Tyres size for a track on MR2 Turbo

Post by GreddyMR2 »

Hi there,

I can't decide on the size of tyres for new season.
I though I will buy R16 205/45 and R16 225/45, but there are no semi slicks of 225/45/16 size.

So I started to think to fit more agressive size.
Fronts 215/45/17
Rears 255/40/17

What do you think it will handle like?

I am looking at some cheap semis like Federal RSR or Nankang NS-2R or similar.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Do A048R's not count?

Or R888's?

Well, they do, but I can't afford them. For a set of 4 RSRs I would pay less than 300gbp.

The other option is to find used R16 A048 or R888. But the question is what would hold better.
Used R16 A048 or New R17 wide RSRs.

You might also want to consider 50 profile 16's as they fit just fine.

Hmm, 225/50 seems a bit tall.

@pistol pete - do you consider selling them? :)

And still wondering, what tyres would result in a better lap time, used R16 205-225 A048/R888/V70A or R17 215-255 RSRs...

If you can't afford decent semi slicks in 16 why go bigger? Decent tyres are expensive.....

You gotta pay to play :thumleft:

RSRs are rated quite well. I am looking at 17s, because there is no needed size in 16s.

How could smaller and narrower tyres result in a better lap times? Or the MR2 is too light for a wider tyres?
I have some used semis, like 255/40/17 A048, so will try them out on a training day :)

AD08r might be as well a good choice even they are more like a street tyre, thanks.

I found very little difference in outright grip comparing A048R medium compound to AD08. The AD08 was simply much better in cold and wet weather.

Is this on a road car? Roughly how many miles do you get out of a set?

Road car yes. The A048Rs lasted 3000miles on the driven wheels

AD08s I'd used them for roughly 4000 mile and they had 2-3mm left on them, sold the car before they wore out.

Ahhh, OK. I would like to try something like the AD08 on my car, but I do too many miles a year really - around 20k. I'll be sticking to regular road tyres I think!

I can't afford 3 sets of tyres a year though!

I do have a set of Rev5 wheels not being used at the moment that were going to get winters on them...

I swapped my T1-Rs for a set and even with only about 50 miles on them they were amazing. The sidewalls are so much stiffer making turnin much nicer, steering feel is much improved too and the grip is fantastic.

I wouldnt put them on something thats used everyday though, the roadnoise on some surfaces is pretty bad and I wouldnt fancy em in very wet conditions.

I'm looking forward to my first trackday this year now!

With coilovers, a Fujitsubo exhaust and silly K&N intake, noise isn't really a concern...

Say whaaaat?

I ran them year round, wet dry hot freezing.

In moderate rain I could launch the car on low boost (10psi) and have the rear wheels maintain grip through first and second no problem.

AD08 are awesome in the wet
