Hi all thinking of removing my el-glow speedhut dials and going back to standard.
Not sure how visable the standard dash is at night so a request for standard dash at night pics only please.
Not got time at moment to do the fancy plastic sheeting and leds at moment and I know that looks good, but after standard only for now.
Cheers ian

Camera will not show what the dash looks like in real life.
Stock dash illumination is perfectly fine. Not bright, not multi-coloured, not like an 80s disco light show. But guess what - it allows you to read the instruments at night.

this..
you don't want the dash to be super bright and full of LED's.. at night the softer the lighting is inside the car the better, allows you to see more of the road and not be dazzled/distracted

Agreed. LED bulbs replacing the stock bulbs all over the dash sucks. Stock lighting is the way to go. Nice and easy on the eye.

Agree with the el-glow but as I was a boy racer MacDonald car parker last time I owned the car and fitted them it was well cool and added 100hp

Only 100 H.P. ? you bought the cheap ones then!
I have a decent set of 'el glow' dials from speedhut with the adjustable invertor and I really like them, not to bright at all and not chavvy either in my opinion However as I haven't driven the car at night for 4 years now I might change my liking of them!

I quite liked my elglow dials
And standard (rev5)

+1 I've just upgraded my turbo speedo cluster to the same Speedhut dials as yours, and am well pleased with the result.
I don't know if they were stock JDM or were fitted on import, but the original black dials on my 92 JDM rev 2 n/a were truly awful and very difficult to read at night. The illumination was far less even than that of your stock dials, which was why I changed them to Lockwood dials. These were much more even at night, but unfortunately not very clever around dusk.
To be fair Speedhut dials are a bit more subtle than the dials usually referred to as elglow, like these Shinny had for sale

Which are more of an acquired taste.

I used EL glow panels and coloured gel film to back light my stainless steel dials, they were the same as the ones in the link below but I asked the seller for un-printed ones. They could be used behind standard gauges and would give a much more even light spread through the dials. The odometer and needles are lit with white leds in place of the standard bulbs.

Mine has not black on my speedhut ones. The entire faces light up and glow. Picture in build thread.
These are ridiculous and just too much so I am now running standard dials with many blown bulbs doh!!
Anybody know the fitment size of the standard bulbs so I can get some replacements

A search reveals them to be 501 size.
I put 501s in mine, and they were way too bright - but luckily I had a UK car with a dimmer control.
So I think you'd be best off getting 504 bulbs (identical, but only 3W as opposed to 5W of 501s).

Yep, just twist the large plastic bulb holders...
Re: pictures of standard dash at night pls.
This isnt standard but just a set of leds:
Looked really good on eye although the picture picked up quite alot it wasnt as bright to the naked eye.
Just thought id throw that in there for you to make your mind up

Re: pictures of standard dash at night pls.
Stock Rev4. Wheel obviously not stock. Exposure has brightened them up a bit.
Re: pictures of standard dash at night pls.
Binned the daft, silver dial faces and blue LED's that came with mine, in favour of stock dials and bulbs.
They are perfectly adequate and look miles better, imo.
