I didn't think you needed a CAT on a 3SGTE MR2 for the MOT ?

I thought they passed basic emissions without one.

Modified engines must still meet the requirements.
An older engine fitted to a vehicle will be tested to the age of the engine (evidence needed). A newer engine fitted to an older car will be tested to the age of the car i.e whichever is the oldest.

I've just cut that from the sticky section on emissions, looking at the latest mot regulations this still stands. Your car should be tested as a 1990 car.

I have an st205 engine in mine too and have always had it tested as a 93 car. The rules say you can so I'd give it a shot and if it fails point it out in the mot hand book and get a free retest, or if that fails get a cat.

I'm sure Pete would be able to tell you for sure but I'm pretty certain I'm right.

Mine looks like the cat is fitted but it got knocked out by a garage as it was broken. I haven't ever given it much thought as I've never had an issue with the test on an MOT. Maybe now I have moved I might have a problem if someone was being a bit lenient.

Have a look and see what you think.

I guess as long as it passes the visual test a 100 cell cat should be ok 8-[

I've had bad experiences with cel cats, my old Leon Cupra R had a 200cel cat on and NEVER passed emissions.

I know this doesn't answer the question but be careful.......mind you the cat is easy enough to change on the mr2 at least :thumleft:

Was a good read :thumleft: ......

" The exhaust emission test The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most spark ignition petrol engined vehicles with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992."

Trying to get my head round this ... I had a rev1/2 , no cat needed and it passed no problem .. I now have a 95 st205 that needs a cat but does it still have to pass the same level of emissions as the earlier rev1/2 or is it tighter because it has a cat :-k

You'll be fine pal its a rev 1. They aren't to know its a rev 3 /2 /1engine.... Just say it is factory turbo!

Tbh most garages are decat friendly if you have a friendly chat beforehand and bung them an extra tenner

As androo007 said most are de cat friendly, if they can legally pass you they will. They don't need to know what revision engine you have and as the guide say the onus is on you to prove your engine age.
Why go out your way to make it a harder test? You wouldn't so this is why this rule exists. As for the other way round with a newer car with an older engine you would have to poverty age but be tested against the less strict emission standard (basic emissions test).

I was hoping one of the affiliates would give some advice or confirm what is being said. If all else fails get it tested if it fails get a cat, maybe have it ready to fit but send back if you don't need it( if time is an issue ).
