[Mk2] [Turbo] Strange engine/turbo noise? (video)

Post by sticks »

Have a really strange repetitive whooshing sound happening when i accelerate can anyone tell me what it might be?

The exhaust is blowing from the manifold/turbo gasket i know that needs to be changed but when i accelerate it makes this sound.the car is only boosting just over 0.5 bar aswell whatevers holding it back

click the link to view the video to hear it.

Anyone able to tell me what it is?never heard anything like it before so im clueless!

VIDEO ONLY WORKS IF YOUR ON A MOBILE****

Didn't see the video.

Reduced boost and "whooshing" noises is often a boost leak. Check for loose clips, split hoses, leaking aftermarket dump valve etc.

Going by the current issue with mine.

Check all the manifold to turbo studs are tight, if the gasses are escaping prior to reaching the wastegate side of the turbo you won't make much boost.

Obviously check the intake side too.

That sounds like on boost compressor surge. Which is pretty serious IMO.

Either you have a turbo much bigger than the engine/tune can cope with or there must be a leak of some kind somewhere. Or even actuator issues.

Whatever leaks you know about, fix ASAP.
Then double check for any others.

Engine and turbo are standard bar air filter and hks ssqv bov.

It does sound very like compressor surge come to think of it

We are talking on boost compressor surge, not off boost. You only have to listen to see this surge in happening on throttle.
No adjusting of the bov is going to sort on boost surge.

mine made this noise when the same gasket went, get the gasket fixed, It does sound like compressor surge but i can bet it isn't, it's the sound air escaping past the gasket, at higher revs my noise would change into a screaming sound, the gasket was acting like a reed on a saxophone. It's nea impossible to diagnose one fault if another fault exists at the same time, fix it and report back :thumleft:

Got loads of ideas, really need to see the vid (or should i say hear it).

whooshing sound, like whoosh !! whoosh whoosh whoosh .. when you change gear is compressor surge.

A spraying sound (on boost) like a disconnected air line .. is boost leak..

A ticking tractor type sound that screams when you get you foot in is a gasket leak.

Hard to describe sounds :eye: did my best :thumleft:

It's good it's not what it potentially sounds like going by sheppys post.

You would experience I'd assume a far amount of bucking or something similar if it was surging.

Let's hope it's just the gasket.

my other suggestion would be leaky bov, however, it does sounds VERY much like the symptom I had, hard to tell from a short video clip though. :(
get the gasket sorted and see what happens, report back :thumleft:

just had another wee listen (video works fine BTW) and there's a lot going on at once, revs building, BOV opening, see if you can get a slightly longer video if possible bud, maybe a pull in 3rd from low rev up to higher revs off boost and on boost as well.

If you can pull the blow off valve and cap it off .. you will get the compressor surge sound i described , but thats ok for a short test .. see if the sound you described goes away.

theres nothing wrong with surge once the throttle is closed, ie what you describe in a previous post.

if you listen to the video, that flutter is happening DURING boost, which "sounds" like ON boost compressor surge. not off throttle surge (which is harmless).

whether this is bov/turbo related, or gasket related is not known yet.

its worth checking there are no leaks around the bov, and that its hooked up correctly. maybe the seal has gone on the bov where the opening is?
easy and free to look.

but given there is a known gasket failure, that has to be addressed either way.

Cheers for all the replys..

@Sheppy-ordered a new gasket today anyway so hopefully should have that done next week.is it handy enough to change?my mechanic will be doing it anyway but just wondering.i hope your right anyway!i havn't went too high up the revs so im not sure if it screams but the gasket definitely need to be done anyway.so ill report back when thats sorted thanks.and i'll try get a longer video later too because that one is a bit short alright :)

@2mad-ya the video won't work on a laptop for some reason because i uploaded it from mobile but ill try get a camera video later :thumleft:
it goes whoosh whoosh whoosh but with more of a spraying air sound.if that makes sense?i know the compressor surge sound because i run no bov on my gsr and it's a totally different sound from that.i'm gonna try removing the bov anyway if i can manage to cap it off but as i said above it's not that type of compressor surge sound it's more a sound of spraying air surging if that makes sense.

@jimgts-ya hopefully!but theres no bucking or anything.it boosts up to .5 and holds well at that but won't go any further.will sort the gasket anyway and see if that does it.

Yes it does mate , i had a dv fail (a stock bosh) and thats the sound i got .. sounded great ... lots of power lost though

I would be thinking boost leak from description.
