New MK1a owner Just saying Hi!

Post by Fujiwara-Ben »

Hi everyone, i'm Ben, and i'm from South Wales and a massive japanese car fan!. Recently I've purchased my very first MK1a MR2. I've been wanting one for ages, and finally i've been in a position to buy one :)

I got it off Ebay for £740 from a guy in Liverpool and it was quite a trek there and back! Have'nt done too much with it at the moment and just saving up for the insurance for it.

It is a bit odd though, even though it was registered in October 1985 it has MK1b bit's on it like the skirts and front bumper part, and i can't figure out if there original or someone has replaced them at some point in time :/

Ohh and here's a pic of my two awesome cars together. Not for too long though unfortunately the K11 has to go so i can afford to run the AW11 (Yes i am a huge fan of the little K11 Micra *waits for stereotypical posts about OAP's*)

The pic's will have to wait as i'm not allowed to post URL's at the moment :(

There are a few thing's i'd like to ask too.

One of the problems i'm having with the MR2 at the moment is the headlight switch seems to be faulty, as you flick the switch so the headlights come up and they don't, however all the other lights turn on. Also if you use the flasher on the indicator stick the lights do come up and flash, but they won't stay on and come back down :/

They work sometimes with a lot of jiggling of the switch but..... it's really temperamental

Hi, welcome to the club,

You're light switch sounds faulty, they are known to fail.
You're car might be a mk1a but pretty early on in production they offered the side skirts, but I'm sure the front splitter never changed till 86

Front bumper looks like the right one (the front edge is pretty much vertical on the earlier ones, it slopes back noticeably on the later ones). Couple of comments though:

It's obviously had a full respray at some point as all of the original decals are missing

The front valance is the wrong type, the early one is made up of 2 metal panels that come under the grille and meet in the middle, then there would be a single full width flexible plastic splitter that is only a couple of inches high across the bottom, you appear to have the later one which has a much deeper 2 part splitter and much smaller metal panels above which just sit at the sides of the grille. It was probably replaced because the metal panels are prone to rust and the earlier ones are much harder to get than the late ones.

Thanks for the comment kaiowas :), i would imagine thats the most probable answer.
I don't think the car has had a full respray though as the green paintwork looks good and original (age'd :L) but the gold definitely been resprayed a few times as it's a pretty bad finish and there is a noticeable lip where the green meets gold
