Hi everyone.
I have just bought my first mr2, it a £700 n/a rev 2 but unfortunatly it has a few bad bits.
The things I am most concernd with are the electrics, that worked fine until the jump leads got put on wrong just before I took her home.
The next thing that concerns me is the engine. Stupidly I didn't check the oil before I bought it. Since getting home I have discoverd the oil level is above max and has tiny metal shards in it. There is also a slite whistling/hissing sound coming from the engine, that I couldn't hear at first over the exhaust blow.
I wont start her again until I give a good service.
The electric problem is that I have no working instrument pannel, heaters or power steering. All of which worked fine before the jump leads got put on wrong.
So can any of you proper mr2 owners give me any advice on what I should do? I want to restore her back to her original self. I hope I dont have to do too much.
Thanks for reading.
Sonic

Re: Help please.
Take it back! Sorry to be unhelpful but with my realist hat on a rev2 n/a with a knackered engine isn't really worth restoring...

Re: Help please.
So do you think its that bad?
Re: Help please.
hissing sound could be inlet manifold gasket. spray some carb/brake cleaner where the manifold meets the head. if the revs climb slightly you have a gasket leak.
as for electrics, have you checked every fuse?

Dont want to pee on your chips but that could be a really bad time .. have you done an oil chage through a filter (paint filter type filter) to see whats what .

Re: Help please.
Cheers mate. The whole exhaust system does want renewing to be fair. I checkd the fuses visually and I think the 120 looks abit brown inside. I dont know how to remove it or what it controls.

Not yet, what do you mean through a filter?
Re: Help please.
filter the old oil out through a filter to see how much metal you're talking. Engines do in general use have very small ammounts of metal in the oil. Its whether it is really bad.
Re: Help please.
Simple paint filter ... like this .. https://www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/images/filter3web.jpg .. drain the oil let it pass through the filter into a bucket .. then check the filter for debris ..
Re: Help please.
Oh right obviously...
Should I do this before getting on the blower to the seller?
It did seem to be running well on the way home.

Re: Help please.
If you bought it caveat emptor then there is nothing the seller will do for you.
I would give him / her a call and just ask. Then depending on the result filter the oil out then see how much metal you've got in there. If it is a significant amount then you could have serious internal issues.

If you think your cars a wrong'n , I would get on the phone .. Yes . ..
Did you drain some oil and find flecks of metal in the oil .
Re: Help please.
You might be able to pick up a spare engine on here worst comes to the worst.

I scrapped a perfectly good rev3 NA engine not that long ago too if you can pick up a whole car for 700 these days then an engine shouldn't be too much.
Actually, my wee one's 2 now so it was ages ago.

I will keep her original then.

It isn't a massive change but you'd need a decent set of tools and obviously an Turbo engine and also whether you'd want a Rev3+ engine which opens up a whole can of worms.
