Can you buy a 3S or 5S new?

Post by MR2 Rich »

I was just reading though PW thread on V6's and noticed you get buy a 2GR engine brand new. I just wondered if you could go to Toyota and buy a complete new 3SGTE or 5S block/engine?

EPC suggests about $15k for a rev3 3s-gte and about $24k for a 2gr-fe

If you're just interested in the block, a rev3 3s-gte one will set you back a mere $2.5k and a 5s-fe block be $2.6k.

Sorry I didn't notice your reply.

That's not bad for a brand new block. :thumleft:

James at JDModified once told me that Toyota sub-contracted the build of a brand new GTE to him because nobody in their dealership was used to working on an old engine.

Toyota might sell you it but god knows if they know anything about how it works!

How can it be 24k for a 3sgte?

did that mean the rest of an MR2 only cost like 10k to build lol?

are you sure it's not 1.5k USD for the 3S block?? I remember the bare block being 800GBPounds, a few years ago mind. Fensport are selling assembled rev3+ short blocks for 2,142GBPounds so 15k USDollars is way way out

Looks at the Fensport website was the reason I started this thread. They have been Out of Stock on the Fensport website for a long time, so I wouldn't think the prices are up to date.

I believe Fensport use to sell Rev3 blocks that had been x rayed, to check for thin casting?

The total cost of spare parts nearly always cost more than the retail price of an item.

plus a gearbox? Clutch, ecu etc? I appreciate the car will be less than the sum if it's parts but that's pretty obscene!

Just ring your local Toyota parts desk and ask them for a price

Give them something to do.

Why would you want to buy a new engine Rich? Hasn't yours just been rebuilt?

Oh, they have things to do (like pricing up my order) but despite that being their job, they seem unable to do it!
