A farting issue

Post by Harold »

Hello chaps,

I do indeed have a farting problem, well the noise anyway. Ever since I had my car taken to have all the belts changed, valve clearances adjusted etc there's been a very odd almost farting noise whenever I reach boost. It's not a constant noise and I can stop it by reducing throttle and then resuming. It will also come on if I'm just boosting along and usually only boosting harder will stop it. It is rather annoying, and does make putting the hammer down that bit less enjoyable.

If I drive very sedately and don't engage the turbo then I will not encounter the noise at all, so it must be something related to the turbo. I've looked around the engine and all the hoses seem in good order.

I can't really take it back to the garage as I've been putting up with the problem for some time now, and it's bloody miles away.

Car is as per profile, MK2 Rev 3 turbo, the only mods to the engine are a bigger intercooler, everything else is standard. Also, no error codes before anyone asks, when the noise starts it does feel like it isn't boosting properly, still boosts to above the line on the standard gauge though.

What are peoples thoughts? Something in the BOV not working properly perhaps?

Thanks all.

Maybe get it on a dyno and you will hear and see where it is coming from... easy way to find out

the goose honk!! Perfectly normal lol. I get it on my rev3, think it's related to the std BOV and the way it works, boosting harder the noise goes away as does lifting off but who does that eh  . Just turn and look at your passenger in a disgusted manner and carry on driving

It is my understanding that the main cause of the goose honk is when people replace standard air boxes with aftermarket items. I believe that the standard air box has a special chamber to get rid of it.

Also, prior to having this work done I had never experienced it before, something must have broken or been connected incorrectly.

Where should I start investigating?

well if you've had the belts changed then they must have removed a few induction pipes so the obv place to start is there and check every clamp / pipe is as it should be. The std airbox setup does muffle a lot of noises esp intake whistling and the actual BOV in operation after a hard throttle close. I've always had my car make the noise so never bothered about it but if it's new after work on your car then I can see why it would annoy you. Some threads I found

Double check the hoses. From the turbo to intercooler and intercooler to throttle body. Take them off clean them up and refit.

Thanks for the links, Confirmed what I thought really, most problems occur from aftermarket bovs and air boxes. I'm going to get my hands in there and check all hoses properly, will disconnect the BOV to get a proper look at it, something must be wrong somewhere.

Are standard BOVs able to be taken apart and repaired? I read something about a diaphragm?
