[Mk2] [Turbo] 6 Puck or Street Disc Clutch?

Post by Big L »

Hi,

I am in the process of rebuilding a my engine.

The car will still be my daily driver / commuter so I am trying to find a clutch to suit the power and driveability.

From reading up on here I have decided to go with ACT but am unsure whether to go with the 'street disc' with XT high pressure plate or the 6 puck HD type

I was going to go with the street disc but the web site seems to suggest this will have a stiffer pedal than the 6 puck.

(There is also a street disc with a weaker pressure plate rated to 390lb but thought I should probably build in a factor of safety for when i drive it hard / track day?

Has anyone had any experience with these?

Hi Odin_s,

That's kind of along the lines I was thinking, don't want to have to change it in 12 months time.

Cheers :thumleft:

Hi Odin_S,

I was wondering, is the pedal any stiffer than stock on your cluch? And do you use it as a daily driver?

Yes, it is much stiffer. But i got used to it. There are are other clutches in think.

My only advice is get a solid centred clutch.

I've seen too many clutches break spring keepers, rendering the car undriveable until the clutch is replaced.

All depends on the quality and number of springs

I found 4 spring clutches would spit springs, 6 spring clutches would not.

I guess because the load was more evenly distributed.

My charade(torque output doubled over stock) would kill 4 spring clutches in short order. Spring would get spat out the disc leaving me unable to select gears. Switched to 6 spring discs and the problem never occured again.

Thanks Odin_S.

Al-sw20 and Marf, this is an interesting topic. I have read on another threads that the solid discs can be prone to splitting and be difficult to drive on the road with. The spring spitting seems quite common also. I notice the act is a 4 spring.

I am considering the street disc and just putting up with the stiffer pedal, they seem to have less issues...

ACT should be able to find a 6 spring plate to suit. If not try approaching Mike at Camskill.

I wouldn't get a solid centre as it'll judder like an alcoholic before his first pint of vodka at 9am.
