Small garage storage problem.

Post by Tsporter »

Hi lads,

My dad has offered to let me store my car in their garage until she's vintage in 2017. I would be taking the car on runs every couple of months to keep her fresh.
The problem I have is the garage is 149cm long, so about 8cm(I think) shorter than the mr2. Would removing the rear and/or front bumpers be much hassle and would it get me that vital 8cm?

Strange issue I know but I'd like to garage her instead of having her sitting in my driveway.

The rear bumper is easier to remove, with a lot less bolts to remove x4 I think from memory, the front on the other hand is far more fiddly, with lots of small bolts along the slam panel (most of which may shear) you also have three small bolts either side where it joins the wings, then there are still the main x4 bolts, it's been a few years since I removed either but I'm sure the rear is by far the easiest.

If your MR2 is only 157cm long then you've got bigger issues than storing it!

I assume you meant inches as a quick search tells me a mk1 should be 155.5" long. Shortening the car by 8cm may be doable by removing the bumper but if you need to remove 8" then it may be a struggle.

As above, rear bumper comes of pretty easily (undo rear bolts from each of the exhaust hangers, undo 2 bolts inside the boot which might give you enough. Taking the front bumper off will probably cause you more issues than it solves.
