REV 5 SUSPENSION

Post by superbrian0 »

I am about to change the suspension on my rev5 removing the 40mm lowered suspension fitted by the previous owner DAN DARE ( Pilot of the future ) who obviously liked the skateboard ride immensely .
I have been offered a complete used rev 5 suspension including 4x s prings and shockers for a bargain £25

HOWEVER

I would really prefer brand new ...( as opposed to tired ) all round . ...which had to be sensibly priced , which rules out the Toyota main dealer who quoted me (£616 for just the springs ..GASP !! )
SO I finally settled for The following all of which are brand new :

2 new front COIL springs made by KILLEN AS OE PRICE .........£127.38 FOR THE PAIR

2 X REAR COIL SPRINGS also 0E made by KILLEN PRICE...........£ 73.84
FOR THE PAIR !!

2X GENUINE TOYOTA FRONT SHOCK ABSORBERS ( turbo stated as fully compatable with REV 5 None turbo ) PRICE...........£159. 98
THE PAIR

2X GENUINE TOYOTA REAR SHOCK ABSORBERS ( turbo stated as fully compatable with my none turbo REV5 )

PRICE...............£173.98

GRAND TOTAL.....................£535.18

This total of £535 is about a £100 more than I wanted to pay even taking into account that I might find an idiot that wanted to buy my DAN DARE 40.mm loweing kit and shockers.

I WAS ABOUT TO HIT THE PLASTIC WHEN...
I read an advert for a mint REV 5 LIKE MINE . the seller clearly knew much more about the MR2 than I ever will .

The point of this lenghty discourse is this ...he stated that the REV5 HAD " A SIGNIFICANTLY " better and more developed suspension setup than ALL previous models.....so you wont be surprised to know that this is the one that I want .

ANY THOUGHTS ON GETTING EXACTLY THAT ??

Regards Brian:

I don't know of any differences between rev5 suspension and any other rev2 onwards but for shocks springs etc have a look here http://www.tcbparts.co.uk/suspension.htm

You were lied to.

Rev3-5 UK front springs all the same
Rev3-5 UK front dampers all the same
Rev3-5 UK rear springs all the same
Rev3-5 UK rear dampers all the same

So what he meant to say was "the suspension on this car is in no way any different to any other UK MR2 built after 1993"

What was different on the rev 2 setup ? Shocks and springs ?

Yep, both.

Are they mechanically the same size/shape though ?

Mine's a rev2 and i've not had any issues fitting replacement shocks - having bought Bilsteins.

I know they changed the geometry and subframe from rev1-rev2+, I'm just curious as to what was different with native rev2 and native rev3 bits.

All same dimensions, so can all be interchanged.

Springs were lowered by a few mm IIRC.

Cool - cheers Pete.

Maybe that's why mine stands like a landrover - may still be original rev2.

No noticeable differences between the Rev5 and the previous versions... (as has pretty much been covered lol).
