Looking at the dyno graphs I'd want the map checking anyway...they just don't look right to me :-k

Why so?
If it's cause of the curve then all turbo'd beams go straight up like that

Mine was making 1bar of boost at 2300rpm though with the disadvantage of nothing after 6700rpm.

Why is that ? Age or are they really that different?

Just the rarity of having an import Rev5 mainly.
But the converted beams actually sit a little closer to the strut tower and a bit further up than the stock ones. Gearboxes were supposedly better and improved too with quite a few receiving factory LSD.

Not the standard S54 or E153 ?

Just an improved S54 (better synchros apparently).

Nope- I get the torque curve as it spools up, pretty much what you'd expect on a smallish framed turbo on a 2l engine. What I don't get is that torque then instantly takes a nose dive, flattens back out briefly before tailing off again...Makes for a very strange power curve, I'm guessing when you drive it, it goes, feels a bit flat, then picks up again...

My guess is that the variable cam is activated around 5.1k rpm, which gives the engine a bit more airflow allowing the turbo to flow better and so pushing the torque curve to the right a bit.

Can you tell the cams when to come in? If it was me I'd be trying to map them in around 4.7 - 4.8k instead- you might avoid the nose dive in torque at that point then, and would probably increase peak torque attained.

That's my guess anyway...would certainly be worth playing with on the dyno......

S54 synchro rings all the same from 92 or 93 on.

I thought the S54 gearbox synchros were upgraded for the Rev5's?

I'd also suspect that the S54 is a bit short for an engine with that much power/torque.
Will obviously accelerate like a mad thing but you'll be forever stirrng the box and it could be a bit wearing/noisy on a motorway...

Camry 5th gear upgrade will sort that out. Same as often done with V6 conversions.

I may well have told you Rev5 S54s have upgraded synchro rings. But so do earlier boxes too.

Yeah I've seen that people do it - I remember my S54 was at 4k rpm at 80, does the Camry 5th make much of a difference ?

When I was looking for an NA box you said only the Rev5 NA boxes had upgraded synchros but Turbos it was from Rev2 onwards. :thumleft:

S54's 5th gear ratio is 0.82. Camry is 0.73.

Pretty sure the extended 5th used in the V6 conversion is an Avensis diesel 6th gear

You're right. The US guys use the Camry 5th gears.

its a different gearbox - avensis is ea61 which has two final drives. s54 and e153 do not.

they are 20 years apart.....

sure that works?

On S54, yes. I've done several and Paul Woods has done dozens.

I wasn't sure which gearbox the extended 5ths came from...I am surprised the donors are ea61s, that's all...

Edit..do you mean the Carina gearbo, not the avensis ?
Is it the same thing?
