MOT fail. no CAT!

Post by GHOST »

No advisories whatsoever but the car failed its MOT as it seems is has no CAT and failed on emmisions. What am I looking at here? Get a cat 2nd hand? Wonder how it passed its MOT last year before it came into my hands ...

If car is a UK car and was first registered after August 1992 it needs to pass a CAT test.

So you need to find a cat.

As to what happened last year? Either it had a cat fitted on the day or a bent test.

Yeah I figured as much Peter. If I can find a cat am I going to have any compatibility problems with my mongoose exhaust?

Mongoose exhausts are usually cat-back systems. I suspect it has a cat replacement pipe fittied which should unbolt easily.

It says it'll fit. Can't see it not working.

They might have (hopefully) got rid of the bent MOT tester.

Another test will cost almost as much as a cat, and he'll still have an illegal car.

No - fix the car, don't get a dodgy test!

Besides, you don't know if the car had a cat on for last year's test or not. It could have been fitted for a day to pass the MOT and then removed again.

I talked to guy who sold it to me and he said it 'just' passed last year without the cat. I've sorted a 2nd hand one out from Chris here so I should get it next week and get it through its mot.

The cars cost me a bomb this last month but its a good one and worth keeping up to scratch and totally legal in my mind.

Utter BS!

Its been at least two years since the MOT rules were tightened so that a decat is an instant fail on any car that requires a cat test.

Sounds about right. So how come decays are still legal and sold if they'll instantly fail an mot? Pre 93 cars?

They're legal on some cars, such as mine. And there are people who get dodgy MOTs. And there are even some who are so determined to run a decat that they swap them on and off for MOTs. Oh, and race cars...

Does this apply to a 1998 UK car fitted with a 94 engine?

Previously as my car was a uk converted to a turbo, it was tested to whichever was earlier, the car or the engine. In my case the 1994 engine .

Have the rules now changed for uk converted mr2's :-k

You'll be exempt from the cat test julian if you can prove the transplant and your tester knows how to do his job

I had the same problem with mine. I managed to by one off eBay for £65 and just chucked this in where the decat was and it went through fine. I've done the same 3 years running but just left it on now till I get my turbo engine fitted

Test is done on the engine year, not the car.

Is there a specific date in august?

Mine was first registered 05/08/1992, will i need a CAT for MOT? I'm assuming its a legislation that was brought in on 1/8/92 but worth checking if anyone knows.
