[Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
Hey guys was just wondering, if I can hit around the 300bhp mark in rev 2 without doing a rev3 conversion what would this consist of if so and is it worth it? Cheers drivermad
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
If you knew you wanted 300bhp so soon, why didn't you get a rev 3 in the first place
I've not seen anyone in my 8 years of MR2 ownership get 300 on a rev 1/ 2 on standards turbo or even if you change the turbo to the rev 3+
260-280 is going to be your target I think. Which in my opinion ain't no bad thing

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
Before increasing boost most on here would advise you change to a rev3+ metal head gasket. After that Probably gonna be upgrade turbo to a ct20b, decat and exhaust. intercooling and possibly colder plugs. Aswell as an fcd and boost controller and gauge. Not sure if you would need to do away with afm which means converting to rev3 ecu.

Cheers for advice

iv seen people hit around 290 bhp just requires a CT20b turbo.. JimGTS hit 301 bhp but he did have a rev3 setup
first things first check if the car has good compression. Then check for any error codes to sort any sensors at fault. Then I would do the following
induction kit
decat
exhuast
decent intercooler
ct20b turbo
cooler grade spark plugs
and up the boost to 1 bar
and if you can source a blitz/apexi/toms ecu I had a blitz one on my rev2 tubby and it was quicker at 1 bar than my standard ecu was. And i got better MPG off boost too
if the h.g lets go then just replace with a rev3 metal one
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
just to add maybe water meth might help you hit your goals plus it will prevent h.g from letting go as early

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
It's do able.
Definitely need an uprated pump and adjustable fpr.
Ideally get an afr gauge, adjust the fpr and boost to suit.
I run 1.3bar on my rev2 on a ct20b with afr in 10/11s on boost at 38psi base pressure. The afm isn't a restriction until a lot more power.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
Again thanks for useful info, I forgot to mention it is the twin entry turbo, and I have exhaust decat induction kit, boost set 2 1 bar although this seems to change, I have bought a gas chris one as recommended and will be getting fitted tomorrow next week I will be ordering a new intercooler +fan kit, how do I go about this water meth?
Cheers

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
If this were my car, I wouldn't run a car on the limit till it breaks. I see not sense in running crazy boost just to get to 300bhp.
My plan would be
Full service and check the health of the car.
Ignition, plugs, HT leads and distributor
CT20b
Get a good intercooler, XS power is the cheapest but there are a few Phoenix Power for sale which are the best. that's all I'd do.
If it's not enough or you get bored of it, then it's time to start saving for your engine rebuild and bigger turbo etc.
Do stuff the right way and your car will love you and always work, go for the quick power and it's just a matter of time before you run into problems
Good luck

Makes sense, still just learning atm in the long run I do have plans to go forge and rev 3 conversion
Cheers

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
hi everyone, interesting post there.me too would like to run about 300bhp or just under.at the moment 266bhp with decat, pheonix power exhaust,Greddy intercooler,Greddy bov and boost at 0.9bar.so really there's not much i can do to get more power, apart from fitting a rev3 turbo ct20.but then how much more will i gain from the ct20 turbo.or just better off sell the car and buy a rev3.as seem that the 300bhp mark is hard to achieve on rev2.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
The compression ratio of a Rev 2 is 8.8:1 and the Rev3 is 8.5:1 so you can run higher boost on the Rev 3 before the knock sensor takes control.
The head gasket blows on a Rev 2 because of knock, if that is replaced with a Rev 3 gasket it is the pistons that go next because of the knock.

Short answer, even with the rev 3 turbo you won't get 300bhp after you tot up the cost of needing a new aftermarker ecu, injectors (rev 3+) head gasket and all other things.
I'd just save for a proper power boost ie bigger turbo, forged pistons etc.
You need to PM Jimgts, as he's the only person i've see who's done a full rev 3 conversionfrom the looks of it, was neither cheap or easy.

so 280bhp is the goal for rev2.thank you.

Plenty have been done, both by specialists and owners at home. We've done at least 15, if not 20.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
Old bump
What about a full rev3 conversion paired with low comp forged pistons? Does it make any sense for you?
- Metal HG
- Rev3 ecu
- 540cc injectors
- MAP sensor
- Forged Wossner pistons 8.0:1
- Stock rods
This setup should handle bigger boost (up to 15 psi as a safe limit), fix detonation over premium fuel while still being friendly budget.
(Uprated smic, decat and ebc are mandatory in this setup)

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] rev 2 power
Ct20b, decat and exhaust, boost control, air filter, hks vpc (like rev 3 upgrade) mines/blitz ecu, water/meth .. turn boost up and enjoy
Thats in short what I did ... and some afc tuning .. still on 440cc injectors
Maybe not 300 fly but must have been close.

This ^^^^
Water Meth is not used so much here not sure why all other turbo cars I have owned and joined owners club have run water meth
Carl ran water meth for ages and had interesting results
