Car sounds like a tractor after speedbump

Post by robin91 »

Hi everyone,

Basically I went over a speed bump yesterday and my car went bang lol. Next thing I know it sounds like a tractor on steroids.

I checked te flexi and it "seems" fine, still shiny and new looking. The bckbox also seems fine.

Only think I can see is a pipe leading from the manifold straight down blowing air, which has nothing on the end of it? It has a silver bell looking thing on top of the pipe ( sorry not tech minded ). But apparently when my friend covered his hand over this pipe, it sounded "normal" again. Is something meant to be on the end of this pipe?

Or any other thoughts?

Also went revving the car it seems sluggish

Thanks in advance

I think your turbo fell off when you went over a speedbump! Must have been a big one.

Yer the speed bump was the size of a mountain lol

I check the turbo and all connections. All seems fine.

Plus it hits boast ( sounds aweful! ).

Is this pipe in question meant to be open with nothing on the end? Or was a valve of some kind meant to be on it? Maybe something came off when scraping over the bump?

Sounds like a boost leak maybe, take a photo on a camera phone and post it, I'll tell you if it's right straight away.

Hey Hez

My turbo is placed in an awkward place so unable to get a picture. Took it to a garage to ramp it up, they didn't have a clue as the owner modifed (customised) the engine.

The car is not pulling in boost like it should at 350bhp. Real luggish, anything to do with the exhuast system?

Sounds like you have an aftermarket setup with a 'dump' pipe or 'screamer' pipe depending on which you prefer. If the dump pipe is pumping exhaust off boost (like at idle) then I would suspect the external wastegate has either died or you've dislodged a vac pipe or two from it.

Cheers,
Jon

btw the external wastegate is the 'bell' looking thing you describe

If you aren't sure put up your location and a local owner will be able to help you for a few beers....
