Where is the intake air temperature sensor

Post by emir »

I did a diagnostic scan.
I got 8 flashes and 4.5 second pause, 8 flashes 4.5 second pause.

According to this
hxxp://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jimilawson/Various/ECU%20Codes.htmlxxx

I have a problem with the intake air temperature sensor.
I found a couple of pics around the net of how it looks (not sure theyr right tho). Anyone have any idea where it is and how does it look.
My car is an 87 mk1b with a maf and catalyst in the exhaust.

Thank you all

Uk cars are map based rather than maf so have a different set up. I'm not sure many people here will be able to go you a reliable answer

Your car does not have a hotwire MAF, it has a mechanical AFM, the IAT sensor is part of that.

Does this mean i have to replace the whole thing, i.e. the whole afm component in order to fix this?

Start by checking continuity of the temp sensor wiring (2 wires) between AFM and ECU, if that is intact check there is a 5v supply going to the THA plug pin of the AFM, if there is then it is likely the sensor has failed, if there is no voltage and the continuity checks out then that points to a fault in the ECU.

You can also do a resistance check across the THA terminal and ground wire on the AFM, if it's open circuit then the IAT has failed.

I do not know if the IAT can be changed within the AFM, sorry.

i might know where to get a spare AFM from if your tests prove that yours is faulty
