Now my 2 has a full mot and its been checked structurally im looking to give it a bit of a refresh. Im taking it off the road for a month (while the weather is crap) to do the following:
1. Gearbox oil refresh
2. Coolant flush
3. Replace Cam Cover (rocker?) gasket due to leak
4. Replace Sump Plug washer due to leak
5. Replace Alternator Belt
6. Oil & Filter Replacement
7. Sump sealant replacement.
8. Cambelt & kit replacement.
Now, ive been quoted approx. £1k for all the above to be done from my nearest mr2 specialist! So thought id give most of it a go myself.
1. Best oil for gearbox - Ive got MTF90 in the garage. Is that ok?
2. Will use Toyota Red. Best place to get this as my local T dealer is useless.
3. Ive heard to replace the screws for bolts and to replace washers too. Toyota seemed very expensive for the washers. Best place for these? Not T
4. Best place?
5. Same as 4
6. Same as 4
7. Best sealant? Im guessing I can use the same sealant for the cam cover Also will I need any gaskets for exhaust if I need to remove part of it?
8. been quoted £207 inc vat labour from my local mechanic I use. I have to supply parts. Was also told its worth getting the water pump done at the same time. Will do the coolant flush at same time so where is best place to get this too?

Word of warning. Water pump cover has a Phillips bolt lock tighted into the housing. It will chew up and not remove.
Whole housing and pump and gaskets £100 approx from toyota and easiest way to complete quickly.
Or you end up taking out housing and drilling out bolt like I am doing at the moment.
Toyota 4 life coolant the same as any other RED coolant just silly price. That what I was told please correct me if I'm wrong.

The guy who I got the quote from is the owner. Hes an older guy. He did say his mechanics don't like doing mr2s and he said whoever does it will hate me! Hes quoted 3.2 hours labour. Im not gonna argue!
However the garage is recommended locally, ive used him a few times and hes a very genuine guy.

The cam cover washers are not just washers. They are bonded rubber washers. Get them from Toyota. Same with cam cover gaskets.
Use a high quality sealant. e.g Wurth or Wynns.
Use cheap parts and you'll be doing the job again soon.
Toyota Forelife is not the same as any other red coolant.
Your say your dealer is useless. So they can't order parts or coolant for you?
£207 for labour for all that work? Cambelt 5 hours, water pump extra 30 mins, sump 2 hours, cam cover 1 hour. I suspect he has no idea of the work involved.

£207 was the labour to do the cambelt kit only for me (inc water pump) but I supply the parts. I haven't asked my local mechanic to do the rest as I may attempt this myself.
I was actually quoted nearly £1000 by my nearest MR2 specialist to do ALL the above and supply the parts.
Out of interest, Peter can you PM me for a price to do ALL the above and supply the parts.

That's what I thought....just not sure if I should let a non mr2 specialist do the work though. I may get some other quotes for the cambelt.

I dont think its a bad job just very labour intensive and time consuming.
And when in there dont be stupid change all idlers and water pump.

As I am currently doing this now. As previously said it isn't a complicated job just very labour intensive i've taken 2 weekend days and i'm half way just at the point where i'm going to take water pump out and swap the cambelt over. I think it will probably take me the same to put it all back as well.

Isn't it called 'long life' now, due to the fact it is like other Glycol based antifreeze and wont last a lifetime?
