I'm looking at getting an N/A MR2. Insurance is a major problem, with most companies not quoting. Current cheapest is Elephant at £2500 for a GT and £1900 for a non-GT.
What is the difference between the GT models and non-GT? The guide on here suggests that it's the 119 (ish) bhp model in the standard (non-GT) but the 'my car check' app says 173 bhp for a non-GT Reg input.
I didn't even know there was a non-GT model, until I noticed on auto trader some have GT in the title and some don't.

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
there is no GT n/a
GT and GTS are turbo models
n/a models are GTi-16, or the import Glimited
HOWEVER, MANY MANY companies insurance wise state the n/a mr2 as a GT, it technically isnt badged as a GT.
ALSO many selling these cars who dont know any better also sell n/as on as GT also.
all very confusing.
you need to be going with a specialist company in my opinion, those that actually know the difference, last thing you want to be doing is paying turbo money on an n/a.
elephant have many drop down menu's, i would have thought it shows glimited, gti-16 etc?? as well as GT turbo, GT turbo TBar etc.

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
Didn't know that tbh! I've just been using registrations to insurance companies. They just read it back as a Toyota MR2 (with some adding GT).
These are the manual options that elephant give:
(I can't post links yet, just replace the XX with TT)
hxxp://thumbsnap.com/VEnPo0Y7
Should it be just (N/A) then? Rather than a GT.

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
No such thing as a GT or non GT in N/A guise
GTi-16 or G-Limited as Jim has said
Get yourself onto a specialist insurer such as sky they should be able to give you the correct model.
If you are concerned about it I would contact them directly and advise that your car is not listed on the website. Give them the exact spec and they should be able to give you a correct quote. If you get a quote on the wrong car it could mean your insurance is invalid.

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
it should have GTi16v in the drop down menus, when i insured mine (on the phone rather than the net) it came back as simply Mr2. no GT, or Gt-s etc...i have to specify that it was a GT model. you may find it easier to talk to an agent.
Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
I rang sky yesterday and they wouldn't quote, along with herts, A-plan and flux.
Rang sky back to confirm the model and he said it's a GT N/A on the system, but manually inputed an N/A and it still wouldn't quote

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
As everyone else has mentioned, gti and g-ltd are n/a, gt and gt-s are turbo.
If you dont mind me asking, what age are you? Any points, accidents etc?
I got a mr2 turbo in Nov '12, i was 25, 3points, no accidents and it was going to cost £1900 (pro-rata as i only got it for last 2 months of insurance).

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
i guess theres nothing wrong with calling it a GT n/a, long as n/a is stated.
im sure many a mr2 n/a owner probably has gt on their v5 also.
gets quite confusing considering most insurance companies have it as gt, so do many sellers.
im sure as said elephant or tesco have many options for the mr2 on there drop downs.

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
I'm age 20, licence for 3 years, and 3 years no claims bonus. No accidents but 3 points for an SP50.
Sadly age is the factor against me, but I was hoping that will be (partially) helped by having 3 NCB

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
Age is one of the biggest factors, its hard to get insured on certain cars under 21yo as i recall. That coupled with points isnt great but keep looking and im sure you will find something.
An alternative is to share the car with more experienced drivers in the family and that may bring price down a bit. Hope that helps

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
Hi bud. I was 18 when I got my first N/A MR2 - a G-Limited as has been stated. My insurance for the first year was a whopping £1350 thereabouts. It was through Admiral.
Keep trying, be specific with the insurers, and you'll eventually find a policy that will work for you. The car's worth the bother (if not the £2500 some people get quoted).

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
James, does the car have a rear spoiler and front fogs? If it does not it is probably a 3SFE engined car which often come up as `Coupe` when you insure them. I had a blue one when I was 20, the insurance is cheaper, and then I sold it and bought an import GT Turbo when I was 23.

Yeah, had a rear spoiler, unsure about the fog lamps but I wasn't looking for them.

That's the way the insurance companies list them. Hence my confusion.

Any ideas on where to look? I've tried all the ones listed on various threads on here. AIB, Sky, flux, Herts. Go skippy phoned me yesterday and quoted £1800, but a google of them suggests it's a major no go.
I'm willing to pay <2000, which a couple of elephant's quotes have come under, but they're not consistent, with some MR2s adding £500, same year, same REV.
Thanks all for the replies

Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
As JD says when they say GT they probably mean as opposed to the GT T-bar, both were also referred to as gti-16 in the UK.
Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
hi
when I first got my rev2 turbo at 19 it cost me £1700 to insure with 3 points and 2 years no claim bonus
i sold it when just after I turned 23 and it went down to £900 (points cleared and had 6 year no claim bonus)
it all depends where you live..
im sure I checked under my g.fs mum and dads place to be nosey and it was around £300 cheaper

Mostly right apart from G limited most are manual
Re: Difference between GT and non-GT
To be honest i still find the admiral group the cheapest, did you try with family on policy?
Also the more voluntary excess you are willing to put down the cheaper it becomes
Try gocompare, compare the market, moneysupermarket etc.. Try different models of mr2s then find the one(s) that are within your price range of insurance. Then you can start the search for your car

Yep, got both parents on there with £850 excess (£500 voluntary + £250 compulsory).
