Rolling arches

Post by GHOST »

As per title. Rolling the wheel arches. What does this involve exactly? Does it damage the paintwork and how expensive is it?

My reason for asking is, since I put on my new wheels with an ET of 35 and a 9" rear, I've started to hear a slight scuffing when the suspension dips heavily. With plans to lower it slightly, albeit on harder springs, I'm guessing they might catch even more under stress.

The car currently on standard REV 5 shockers.

Any opinions and advice welcomed.

Rolling will often crack the paint along the edge where the lip is folded back on itself. It's a risk - sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Shock absorbers have nothing to do with ride height. That's the springs' job.

Archroll

Post by cosmos »

There is arch roll approx £100 and arch flare ? Archenemy seem to give national coverage, heat appears to allow the paint to stretch a little, make sure you ask for the arch to be sealed before rolling to make them waterproof.
What tyre size did you go for?

I used a rolling device in my workshop.

Can't remember what tyre size Kong fitted. PM Kongeroo.

We rolled the arches on my old tintop, wheel size was 9x17 ET35, with 255/40/17 tyres.

Cant say a bad word about archenemy, they managed to roll my old cars arches perfectly even though there was a dodgy touchup spot along the edge. My current car also had its arches done by them.

Cheers guys. Picked up some stuff from Mark (GT Thunder) today which included some 35/40mm drop springs so I'll see how the rubbing goes after that. He said it could be on the inside so I'll see.

By the way, Marks a pleasure to deal with. :thumleft:

Did mine myself to fit 9j ET35 with 255/40. One arch was fine, the other the paint cracked. It was already crusty though.

If the tyre profile is too big it will rub the strut.

If the strut doesnt rub the tyre before lowering, it will not rub the strut after lowering.

The spring cup is above the tyre, all the "drop" happens above that point.

It may rub the arch or liner, but not the strut.

Archenemy did my old E36. Perfect job - no cracking at all.

I just fitted 255-40 tyres on the rear and I'll need to have my arches rolled, the car is on tein springs so sits pretty low.

If it's only just rubbing then you might get away with using some Eibach camber bolts on the rear to just tuck the top of the wheel very slightly :thumleft:

I've also heard very good reviews of ArchEnemy though

Don't patch the problem at the expense of the suspension geometry, roll the arches.

1.5° won't hurt surely? The majority of MR2's will have their geometry so far out after 20 odd years that it wouldn't make a difference anyway

Just suggesting a £30 possible solution as an alternative to £130 + potential paint repair costs :thumleft:

Yep understood, I still wouldnt screw with the geo to mask a rubbing issue.

If price is a problem, then aim to fit smaller wheels/tyres which won't rub

Should be having fairly regular geometry checks too, these cars are pretty sensitive to dodgy geo

I know you're not local to me, but you don't know any good geo specialists in the East Midlands do you Marf? :)

Nice :)

Wheels in Motion shouldnt be too far from you.

Tony setup my MR2 shortly after I had my 16*7/8 Enkeis with AD08s fitted, car felt so planted afterwards.

Definitely worth the trip :thumleft:
