Doh brain fart.
Quick update.
I am determined to get the car out rallying again this season. Only a couple of things to sort.
Dated seats and belts, looks like we'll be going for Motordrive (Manchester).
http://www.motordrive.com/acatalog/Comp ... Seats.html
Gearbox / synchros, two options here. Get the box rebuilt with standard bits or give it to Elite Racing Transmissions (Stoke). Elite can design, create and fit the shortest final drive that will fit in the case. I was surprised to find that Elite will strip the box and measure up and design a final drive for £140-170 then make a one off final drive kit for £700+vat. Very reasonable considering an off the shelf final drive from Jubu or Kaaz will cost at least £1300.
http://www.eliteracingtransmissions.com/
Ideally (and if the CWP fit in the case) we'd be after a 5.6 final drive ratio. Which on 23in dia tyres would give us the following gearing:-
1st - 30
2nd - 46
3rd - 64
4th - 81
5th - 103
6th - 115mph at 7750rpm.
A 5.6 would also give an increase in torque to the rear wheels of about 20%, quite a significant boost I am sure you will all agree. Especially considering the car is no slouch with its current gearing.

We've taken an extended break from rallying due to marriage, house and job moves etc, my life getting in the way basically. Things are now settling down so thoughts have moved to recommissioning the car. Should be a simple task, either a gearbox rebuild to fix some synchros or a new box, whichever works out most cost effective.
Now I've got a quick question for you guys.
Will 13in wheels fit over standard aw11 front brakes?
Does anyone have any 4x100, 13x6-8, et20-40 wheels lying around that they could test fit on the front of a mk1 before I go blindly into bidding on wheels?
Yes the car well look strange with 15s up front and 13s on the back but with the correct tyres the gearing will be shortened by over 10% and our choice of rubber will be much improved and cheaper. Win win.
Any help much appreciated (pics if possible).
I have some 13" splitrims here Rally, with spun ali rims
The inner rim fits over a standard 1b rear caliper with room to spare
I also have some 13" x 100 pcd steel wheels (Vauxhall)
They do not fit over the caliper
So it seems that some 13s could fit OK
Don't have any forged or cast ali 13s here to try at the mo
Like you, I'm interested in using 13s on the rear

Interesting solution does this mean with the new CWP you will not have to resort to 13" wheels?
Re: Rally Car
I'd still want some 13s for tighter twister stuff, 13s with a 5.1 FD would give the same gearing as 15s and a 5.6 FD.
13s with a 5.6 FD would be flat in 6th at 105mph (ish).
It's always good to have options.
Thanks for the info Elbon, nice to know that some 13s will fit, much cheaper than custom gearbox bits, also makes tyres cheaper too.

Re: Rally Car
Elbon, something has just sprung to mind. The rally car has mk1a front calipers and disks out back, have you ever tried them up front?

No, but I will do ASAP Rally

Yes, have tried them up front now Rally
Similar to the back, the Compomotive splitrim fits over the 1b disk/caliper with room to spare
The Vauxhall steel does not fit
The spitrims are lovely wheels, very very lightweight
Just one snag they are 3 3/4" pcd (Triumph fit) & I havn't been able to get 100mm centres for them
How do you manage for handbrake on your car with 1a fronts on the rear

I'm guessing, hydro.

Re: Rally Car
Thanks Elbon, as Lauren said its a hydraulic handbrake. A master cylinder is linked to the standard handbrake lever, the handbrake cables are still in place so all looks very standard for the MOT. Only problem is its not a fly-off handbrake so not ideal. It is far more effective than the standard toyota setup though (as long as you don't lose all the fluid).
Re: Rally Car
The race car I bought from Granville Williams way back had 13"x8" front and 13"x10" rear. I think the rear brakes were standard but the fronts were non-standard, just can't remember what!
I always regretted going to 16" on the later iteration and wished I'd kept smaller brakes and used lightweight F3 wheels and tyres.

Re: Rally Car
Have you made any progress in getting the gearbox parts made yet?
Elite seem to be a top notch company, don't they build all the sequentian gearboxes that the top Mk2 Escort drivers use?

Re: Rally Car
No bits yet, but a weekend is set aside to drop the box and begin work, we might chuck a fresh 5 speed box and LSD in for now as there is one knocking around in cogboy's kitchen.
Yes Elite make some impressive kit. Escort gearboxes are a funny one, no one I speak to seems to agree on what / who is best. Horses for courses I guess, especially with escorts ranging from 150bhp for a decent pinto to 350bhp with a millington.

Re: Rally Car
I thought the reason you went for a 6 speed box was because the standard AW11 driveshafts were too short and pulled out of the diff housing.
If you revert to a 5 speed will you be able to use the equal length shafts with a supported shaft?

Re: Rally Car
I'm not really sure what we're doing yet, we've learnt a lot since the conversion was started. It would be possible to make the current shafts fit a 5speed box, just need to swap the diff over. We may even have a 5 speed box with the correctly splined diff.
We'll be working on the car next weekend so will know more then.

Progress
Last Saturday saw us drop the C64 gearbox (a job which really doesn't take us long these days!). We briefly discussed putting in one of the 5speed LSD boxes that we've got but quickly decided against it.
The box is currently with Elite Racing Transmissions having the shorter final drive made (the shortest that will fit on the case).
The next job will be a front ARB and maybe a bigger brake master cylinder.
Any ideas which master cylinder to go for? I've heard MK2 MR2 (non-ABS) and also Hilux Surf or was it landcruiser, I'm not sure.

Re: Rally Car
I have the MK2 MR2 (non-ABS) and it does a good job.
Regarding the final drive, let me know what they come up with and at what cost..... might be interested.
