I set about replacing the front discs and pads today only to fail at the first hurdle. I've never done this before so I wasn't expecting to do it quickly.
One of the two floating pins (is that what they're called?) that allows the caliper carrier to move in and out is seized. I've managed to get it to turn but I can't get it out. This obviously needs sorting before I put new discs and pads on.
I've no idea how common this is. I presume if I do get it out I should try to get some new rubber boots for it.
Should I just give up and try to get another one from somewhere? I'm not quite sure how I'm going to get this out seeing as it's not on a thread, so I can't simply use a spanner.
Cheers,
Kingsley.

It will be easier if you swap the caliper support bracket using a salvage part. That way you will get pins which slide and boots which seal.
Plenty on ebay (make sure you get the correct side and that it's a post rev 1 part)
See:

This is what the pins look like:

Available either from Mr T or here:

Lots of heat! Worked for me in the past.
If you're in the South East somewhere, I can help you out, but if not, get something like
http://www.screwfix.com/p/auto-start-blow-torch/64845
I got one from Halfords that did the trick.
Get it good and hot and it will pull out in the end.
Cheers,
John

Oh, and get some copper grease or other high heat grease, as you'll need to cover the pins in that once you have cleaned it all up.
Get a small round file to clean out the pin holes.
Cheers,
John

don't use copper grease on the sliding pins! Use proper brake grease otherwise you'll make the problems that much worse.
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Front brake floaty thing seized
Hi,
Thanks for the excellent and informative replies
As I've got discs and pads for front and rears, it makes sense for me to have a look at the other three before buying stuff in case I need more than one. The OSF is the only one I've attempted so far and where I found the seized sliding pin, and then it got dark so I had to stop anyway. The others might be similar for all I know. I don't know what state the calipers are in either - I'll see how smoothly the pistons push back in.
I can see from the pin that I was able to slide out that the previous mechanic had used copper grease on them.
I found that Toyota Rubber Grease on ebay (thanks raptor9GTS and stuMR2eye for the heads up on that), but it was coming from the US so postage was over £25! I've googled for it but haven't been able to find anyone in the UK advertising it. I'll drop Fensport an email to see if they have any (I can't find it advertised on their site).
If I can't get any of that rubber grease for a sensible price, would MS3 grease do?
Thanks going4the1 for the links - it makes it easier to see when everything's laid out.
super - thanks for the offer but I'm in Wales so not that close to the South East. I do have a propane torch though which I've used for soldering pipes when doing the plumbing in my previous house so if I need to resort to heat, I can try that. I'll see if I can get replacement bracket(s) at a reasonable price first - it might be handy to have spares anyway.
I expect I'll run into other problems but I never expected this to be totally straight forward. I expect the discs will take quite a bit of encouragement to come off.
Cheers,
Kingsley.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Front brake floaty thing seized
I just bought the rubber grease from Toyota. Your local dealer should be able to get it for around £10 and it lasts for ages. Well worth the money.
Try these if you can't get to a dealer: http://cheaptoyotaparts.co.uk
Edit: if the discs put up a fight just screw in a suitably sized bolt into the hole provided on the disc and it will come off easily.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] Front brake floaty thing seized
I've tried to find a dealer round here but for some reason the Toyota dealer finder page doesn't think our postcode is valid, and doesn't consider Aberystwyth to be a valid town. If yell.com is to be believed, the nearest one is about 35 miles away on slow roads. Thanks for the cheap parts site - that's going to be useful.
Thanks for the tip on the bolt hole in the disc. I didn't notice it earlier but will have another look when I get back to it.
That howto is excellent - I hadn't seen it so thank you for the link.
Cheers,
Kingsley.

You're welcome. Also Trevor at TCB parts can supply genuine Toyota parts if you call him:
