[Mk2] [Generic] Dashboard bulb stock replacement - Size?

Hi

The dashboard bulb covering the fule gauge and left portion of the speedo has failed.

I believe I need a capless 501 for a straight swap?? Can you confirm?

Also - do I need a green 501 or do the origial bulbs have a green sleeve which will slip over a white/clear replacement?

501 is the right one for the main back lighting on the panel.

I get the clear ones from Halfords and gently take the coloured sleeve off the old bulb.

You may as well replace all 4 of them at the same time so you have the same brightness across the dashboard.

I think 504 type bulbs may be better.

They're the same size as 501 but lower wattage.

I put 501 bulbs in mine and they were very bright - but having a UK car I had the dimmer dial

Hi JohnnyC - I'd just replaced all 4 lights with 501s that I had in the garage. Not heard of 504s until I read your post. Yes I've got a dimmer on mine too. I may swap to the lower wattage ones if I'm not happy!

Anyway whilst sorting the lights I refurbished the cloth dust seal above the steering column. It' was faded a light brown colour and really let the dashboard down. The material accepted black felt tipped ink and now looks showroom fresh.

Really pleased.
