More N/A power

Post by GHOST »

What's the beat way of squeezing a little more power out of a standard N/A engine. Air filter, tuning? Shedding weight isn't an option, I like my luxuries a little too much.

Currently running a standard rev5 engine at 75k with a mongoose exhaust.

Please, no 'buy a turbo' answers lol.

Not gonna like this mate, but not much point tuning an NA past filter and exhaust.

Turbo or V6 engine conversion.......

or as above, add a supercharger

Unless you have deep pockets, in which case there is plenty you can do...

We got good results from our rev 3-on toms ecu. Great mid and top end on it compared to standard.

Would be interested to see back-to-back dyno sheets from same dyno.

Haven't dyno'd it yet with the toms but are going to. All we have so far is improved lap times.

I can only echo what people have been saying. If more power noticeable power is what you are after, the turbo route weather by conversion or car IS the most cost effective option.

Once you do change, you will wonder what took you so long

If you love to stay N/A 2gr V6 is the only option i would choose... but it is quite expensive.

At far as air filter on the N/A, it might make a difference but not enough for you to notice. Sounds nice though.

N/A is a very nice car to drive, but if you are look for more power you are betting on the wrong horse

Fensport claim to have done this to their track celica

Lightly ported cylinder head, skimmed to increase compression ratio and using a GT4 metal headgasket with ARP head stud conversion. The throttle body was also ported, and a Blitz SUS air induction kit along with a custom cold air feed was added. A HKS exhaust manifold and system is used with a Mongoose de-cat pipe, the modified engine still retains the standard ecu and produces 199bhp, a healthy increase of 26bhp over the standard engine.

Power Deck Spacer,
De-Cat,
Exhaust,
Performance Air Filter,
Then if you don't mind spending money;
Lightened Flywheel,
Cams,
Aftermarket ECU

If your not after chasing power, but just want that bit more grunt, have a look at my project thread :thumleft:

Probably cheaper to buy synxero's Beams than get a supercharger fitted and mapped

Btw Lee I'm going to need those address details next week if the bumper hasn't been shipped by then. I think I have been more than patient, don't you?

I have hear it said that N/A tunning is the expensive way to go slowly.

I beleive the rev5 N/A has less power than the rev 3 so a good start will be rev3 cams and ECU. Your never going to see more than 200bhp without some seriously expensive ECU and ITB combinations. I would say loose weight or forget N/A tunning. A turbo or V6 is the only way to make a quick stock weight MK2. If you like the N/A feel then go V6.

What's the difference in the quoted power claims between rev3 and rev5 NA... 4bhp? AFAIK that's just down to emissions tweaks. I'd be surprised is the cams are any different between the two engines and swapping the ECU will be rather problematic for the rev5's immobiliser!

I thought it was down to EGR, but it might be cams.

I thought all rev3+ NA cams were the same, but when I built my engine we found at least three slightly different profiles in rev 3 / 4 cams. From memory I had one rev3 engine and two rev4 engines, all with different cams.
