New Owner - service and cambelt, what else?

Post by Marmalade »

Hi,

I had a '94 Rev 3 GT Turbo tin-top some years ago when this site was all fields blah, blah. Lifes many ups and downs, moving to NZ, moving back etc I have been hankering after a little sports car.

So, as of last weekend I am now the proud owner of another '94 Rev 3 GT turbo, blakc this time instead of green.

Car is virtually completely stock, now before I do anything to it I want to make sure it is mechanically sound. Cambelt was last changed at 58k, it now has 97k on the clock. So full service and change the cambelt.

Question is, when this is being done, should I replace anything else, some people talk about doing the water pump at the same time?

All thoughts greatly appreciated.

Does the car have much history? I'd probably be changing the cambelt, all pulleys and tensioners, alternator belt, water pump and air conditioning belt if it has it. Make sure all the ignition related components are in good condition, so leads, spark plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap and coilpack.

It has older receipts, which is why I know when and what mileage the cambelt was changed but more recent history is just MOT's each year where it has not done too much mileage, the previous owner saying it was always serviced when it was MOT'd.

I have already purchased all the ignition side of things, leads, dizzy, rotor arm etc and they will go on this weekend.

The car is booked in at the end of the month for a full service, new rear disks, new pads, brake fluid flush and replace, fit braided brake lines and inspect calipers at the same time, gearbox oil flush and replace, replace all ignition components, plugs, leads, dizzy etc, replace camblet and will look at water pump and alternator belt at the same time, compression test and leak down test on the turbo, plus inspect for play.

I want to be sure the car is sound before I do anything to it.

Are they MR2 specialists?

When I first got my MR2 I took it to the local garage for Cambelt and Service.

The fella at the garage moaned like hell about how hard the Cambelt was to do and said he would have charged more if he'd known. I think £450 for Cambelt and service was more than enough thanks!
