Hi im doing a timing belt in a mates mr2 have done mine many times with no issue but this always is a tooth out either side he got the water pump an old one was thrown away car been standing ages.
at my witts end an i can only guess he got a pump for a rev3 as his is a rev2 maybe extra tooth throwing it out??
This pump has 23 teeth an idea what the rev 2 should have??

I had the same problem with a cheap pattern water pump.
It wouldn't time correctly. Pulley had 23 teeth, bought a genuine pump, it has 22 and it timed fine with that.

Seriously!!
That must be the problem I've had the belt on an off more times then I care to imagine an it won't time right at always out it is a eBay pump though its the only thing I can think it can be.
Never had this prob before.

Ive a pattern pump on mine an it timed up fine that was three years ago.
Bizarre on this situation but i may have to tell him to get a genuine if it doesn't go tomorrow.

Got it timed up today think i was trying to rush after work an that but all done
Really should get mine on road soon been sitting two years +.

The correct pump would probably do.

Surely the water pump pulley shouldn't have any effect on the timing aslong as the belt is tensioned correctly. It just spins.

It does affect the tension, to the extent I couldn't get the belt to sit correctly over the cam pulleys while having no slack from exhaust pulley to crank.
