Water Pump **** up

Post by SuperRedMR2 »

Has anyone got the 'stick out' dimension of the water pump pulley?

Mine is new but completely mis-aligned with the other two pulleys.

Cheers

Could it be an AE86 one?

Can't see how you it can be misaligned.

All Mk1 water pump pulleys are identical, they are even the same as the AE86 pulley. Some FWD Corolla water pump pulleys have a different centre hole and PCD, so they fit only the water pump on that engine (very rare but i have seen it once) , however they still have the same offset. Although it is impossible to fit one of these pulleys to an Mr2 pump due to the PCD etc.

There are two possibles....

1) You have fitted the wrong water pump.
2) The crank pulley is the wrong one.

Or i've been supplied the wrong water pump which is the likely answer as the same company supplied me an incorrect fuel filter.

The crank pulley is identical to my original one.

The water pump pulley is miles out to the alternator pulley.

The alternator pulley lines up spot on with the crank pulley - or are you saying my alternator is wrong as well?????

This is what I ordered

Maybe it's down to human error there end and they sent me the wrong one.

Paul,

This is the engine you supplied me which did not come from an AE86 or an AW11, it was from an AE92 - maybe the pumps are different on those, altogether???

So, my original question, can anyone measure the distance from their block to the face of the pulley please?

Seems not easy to measure distance between cyl block & face of pump pulley with coolant pipes & everything else installed in engine bay Alex

What I do notice is that the central "blob" of the pump, where it comes through the pulley, seems to be a centimetre or more closer to the chassis in your pic than on my car

I think what the issue is Peter, I have an AE92 block and the housing for the pump may well be different, which is why the MR2 pump pulley does not line up with anything else.

Unfortunately I threw away my old pump so I could not look at it. Being naive I thought it was the same.

It's very easy to say i have the wrong pump fitted, but if I knew originally that I had an AE92 block and/or the housings were different I wouldn't have bought the MR2 pump.

Hold on a sec here, are you saying it's my fault? A 4age is a 4age, it doesn't matter what car it comes out of.

ALL 4a-ge water pumps are interchangeable, the blocks are no different in this respect, therefore by logical deduction you don't have the correct pump on there.

Hope that helps.

It is approx 92mm from a 4age block face to the outer face of a Mk1 water pump, if you have a mk1 pump on there then the water pump housing is different, simply fitting a mk1 housing will sort it.

I need the housing - any ideas where I can get one from?

Got any old ones on any blocks kicking about?

No i'm not saying that, sorry, that could have been rephrased - apologies.

I agree the pumps are interchangable but the housing is different.

I do have the correct pump, just not the right housing, which isn't your fault.

But the housing is an integral part of the pump :?

& the pump shaft seems to be too long

CarPartsOnline "article number" for that pump is 9076

A pump for a different engine wouldn't be the correct shape to fit the block

This is weird
