[Mk2] [Turbo] Crank pulley bolt removal - engine out of car

Post by toecutter »

Can't get the bolt out for the crank pulley, and engine is out of car now so cant use starter.

Impact guns don't move it.

Anything else I could try?

So I removed the bottom gearbox cover, inserted a screwdriver to hold the flywheel:

And then broke out the big gun- Dad bought this to change the hubs on his skoda, this is a real breaker bar

I didn't even need to lean on it and it came undone- happy days \:D/

I had similar issues with mine on a GT4.

I took the sump off and put a block of wood between the crank and block and then after breaking 2 sockets myself had to pay for a mobile mechanic to come out.
He had a modified double hard air gun that took 2 tanks of air and 20 minutes before it finally moved. He was just sat there holding the gun until the tank ran out, then filled it up again and did the same before it finally let go.
You could try heating the crank pulley up first maybe?

I guess I am saying, persevere and also make sure you have a decent gun.

Thanks ashley, can try that but means putting box back on.

basher - didn't think of jamming crank, will try that first. I'm using a good gun but don't think it will move it. I only have a small blowtorch for heat and it didn't help.

Don't heat the pulley- it is made of two steel parts with rubber sandwiched between...a blow torch will wreck it =;

Oh- and you don't need to put the box back on to jamb the flywheel :thumleft:

I only tried a small amount of heat.

How do you jamb it without box? I tried using the stud but it was forced out when I turned bolt.

Got it by bracing crank and flogging a spanner, thanks for advise.

Air impact gun works for me, but kind of useless suggestion if you don't have one!

Make up a proper tool which bolts into the threads on the crank pulley and allows you to brace it whilst wrenching on the bolt.

Trying to brace the crankshaft itself is a recipe for disaster IMO.
