[Mk2] [Turbo] Running in new engine build procedure/oil type?

Post by toecutter »

Have a standard rebuilt Rev 2 engine, what procedure should I use to run it in?

Also should I use a different oil for running in?

An interesting read;

With regards to oil you want some crap mineral 10w40 as the fully synthetic oils lubricate too well, and won't allow the piston rings to bed in correctly.

Cheers not seen that before.

Do you know how many miles/hours I should use mineral oil for before I change to synthetic? Or is that a preference thing like break in?

I was advised to run in for 500 miles. Don't rev too high but do use boost as that helps bed in the piston rings.

Have heard a few different approaches when it comes to changing the oil, I know a guy who builds Cosworth engines and he changes the oil at 100 miles and 500 miles with mineral oil and then puts fully synthetic in at 1000 miles, probably overkill but I know he has never had a problem.
