Opinion on BOV's

Post by Ethan21 »

What's everyone like/recommend?

E.g. Baileys, blitz, apexi, hks, hks copy, forge, standard etc etc

Want another one I currently have a genuine hks ssqv 2 and don't like it I've had standard ones but never what i would call a fully working one being 20 years old

Thanks,
Nic

Either HKS SSQV or stock BOV recirculated.

My favourite was the old HKS Racing TypeII, this is the one I had on the Supra.

I have hks ssqv, works well and sounds good around mid range revs then gets ridiculous at high revs

The HKS SSQV is one of the more reliable BOV's as it uses a pull type valve, so shouldn't leak under higher boost pressures. Saying that, there are a lot of cheap poor quality Chinese made copies on the market, so only buy from a reputable dealer.

other than that, my main opinion for performance is to not run one at all.

Yeah, similarly I think the sound improved when I swapped the "triple blade" thing for the recirc insert - I haven't put the hose on to recirculate it yet as I prefer the slightly dulled sound it currently has compared with the standard sneeze.

I was also thinking that the recirc adapter opens up endless possibilities for novelty sound attachments. You're only limiting factors to consider are a) it clamps over the flange and b) it lets the air through sufficiently. Hmm.

I'm running a knockoff SSQV with silver insert which I have chopped up a bit. Sounds more bearable than an untouched one but could probably do with a little more tweaking.

Got a Super Sound too but it sounds a bit too plain and quiet for me.

You especially notice it on gear change. Not run a bov for about a year now and love the chatter :D

I'd like to run without one as I like the chatter but journal bearing turbos don't seem to share the same opinion. Our first CT20b was run without one and very soon after we took ownership of the car it was circulating a lot of oil inside the pipework and a piece of compressor wheel went missing. Onto a second one now which is boosting fine but puffs out some blue smoke on idle occasionally. This is running a SSQV since rebuild and having a few full flutters along the way due to BOV failure.
