HOT HOT HOT - remove rain guard?

Post by nickg07 »

So, miraculously, the sun has found its way to Oldham and now we are bathed in it. My engine is getting hot. its a daily driver so I get stuck in traffic and allsorts.

Is there any value in removing the engine lid rain tray on the inside of the engine bay? also any hidden pitfalls, like the bump stoppers at the rear wont go back in or something?

I've already angled my BOV to point right out of the 1/4 open gap in the rain tray, but im thinking in 25 degree heat if I just removed the bu88er temporarily until we get back to normality it can only help engine temps?

Also, is it time to finally install my ARC intercooler? my Cold pipe was HOT when I just got out of my car this evening with the OE IC.

As for the rain tray, remove it and replace it with a spal fan tray!!

You should be alright if your not driving spirited. I've been told numerous times that the MR2 is well over cooled as standard.

But yes this weather over in Whitefield is very hot indeed. My N/A seems to be coping well on a daily basis in this heat.

Engines get hot, provided the coolant system and intercooler are in good working order then the worst that'll happen is you'll loose hp in the hotter weather.

I drove a 550hp Supra in Hong Kong for years regularly in 35C+ temps and the traffic in the UK is nothing compared to there!

The intercooler pipe to throttle body should still be warm/hot even if you have an aftermarket smic although intake temps should see some improvements when travelling at speed. Sticking a fan on the engine lid would be my choice, especially in a lot of stop start traffic where you are.

Wilkie, how significant does that fan reduce engine bay temps? Im thinking of doing what your doing as it keeps the original rain tray and hence stops water getting everywhere. Where did you get your fan from?

Thanks.

HI there matey

it has reduced by a couple of degrees, easily, in traffic the temp needle would go above the halfway line.

i was told by fellow members etc the range a explained was perfectly acceptable, but hot day, stuck in traffic I would rather have some "insurance"

you could wire in as i have done, and have a "cut out" switch (switching the earth) if you feel you don't need it, it now sits halfway very happily, even in traffic.

the fan is a 10" universal, just change the polarity round to get a pull or pusher

here is the store http://stores.ebay.co.uk/1stCarParts/Ra ... 513&_pgn=4

hes got his prices cocked up, i bought the blue 10" universal fan for £19.99 (hes got £190.00, i have messaged him to say prices wrong.

relay, was a couple of quid, various connectors, inline fuse, & cable bits i had around, i did pop a blue LED in the fan shroud, cant keep that chav in me down for long, my lad Wilki, always calls my car the chav car lol cheeky bu88er

regards Brian

P.S.
I can forward the wiring instructions, if you like Shinny posted it a bit back, that give all the information correctly, CBA to write it out as it already there lol, (credit to Mark aka Shinny) he did the same on his turbo and found it, worked well, he had the twin fan shroud on and found like Protok too much rain coming through

hope that helps

HI re the high price on ebay for the blue fans here's the guys reply

"Hi there, they are out of stock. We increased the price is to stop people buying them. There's no one going to buy it at that price. And this is the one way to protect our sales record, ebay hasn't got a system to do that. Sorry"

Hi i would have thought so

he like many other ebay sellers with a store front, market the same product, listed under many headers, i.e. the same fan will be listed as a saburu, focus, Audi etc, to realise as many sales as possible.

1st car parts has just emailed me to say, the fans currently out of stock, (listed for SILLY money, see his message in my previous posts) that they will be back in stock in around 5 weeks

Brian :-)

Have you considered a full "Rogue" or "KO racing" fan kit - the ones which replace the entire rain guard...

They knock a fair amount of heat out of the engine bay :thumleft:

I ran without a rain tray for a couple of years. Defiantly allows a lot more heat out without the tray. So much so you can see the heat haze in traffic.

I've rouge fans now but they put quite a drain on the battery/alternator at idle.

Yea I;'ve just whipped the rain tray off, hardest bit was unscrewing the temp sensor and doing it single handed so it required me to prop the lid up with my shoulder and attack the rain tray screw at an arkward angle. all done now anyway, will test later.
