Oil Cooler Query - Hoses and Placement

Hi all,

Couple of queries regarding fitting an oil cooler.

1) Are push on fittings good enough?
2) Is there no oil pressure drop when fitting an oil cooler with long hose ie. over 2 meters
3) I ideally need to route this somewhere with airflow, what are my options if I still have a SMIC

Firstly, have you measured your oil temps to confirm you need one?

Depends on whose you buy. Stick with the likes of Goodridge or Think Automotive and you'll be fine.

In theory yes, depends on hose type and diameter.

Most MR2s with oil coolers hang them low down in the engine bay or under the boot floor.

My Noble will have engine and gearbox coolers upfront.

I was looking at mocal, jjc, merlin stuff and think auto. Think this is all good stuff.

hose diameter is 1/2BSP.

I just need to find a place to mount it but dont want the hoses too long to prevent the aforementioned pressure drop

Merlin and JJC are Mocal resellers. Think Auto are importer and wholesaler, so go straight to Think. PM me if you want Goodridge.

What makes you think you need an oil cooler?
Oil should be run at around 100c to 120c, cold oil is not good for an engine
Designer for turbo set ups on F1 cars, and Nitrous Oxide Systems of the USA in the 80s

Prolonged track work will see temps at 120+ will it not?

This is not for definite, I just wanted to get people's thoughts

The oil is heated and cooled by the cooler on the engine, so I have never found that there is any need for an extra cooler even being out on track for half an hour at a time.

It would be best to check the temperatures first before adding a cooler, I do not think you are going to need one.

From things I have read it would suggest some recommend a cooler and others don't. What oil temps are you seeing bob?

My car is running 1.1 bar - 340 hp

With the stock set up I find it very hard to get the temp over 100c

You need to check what temp you are running.

Is that using a stock car Bob you struggle to get to over 100 degrees?

Why do others seem to see temps 120+?

It all depends on where the temperature in being measured, if it is in the sump it will read higher than after it has been through the stock cooler.
I had a chat with Castrol back in 1980 about my Chevy oil temperature getting up to 150c after 3 laps of Goodwood, and the said yes great no problem at all.

My MR2 is about 320 HP all stock but running 1.5 bar boost on a CT20B and 110c is the most it gets too.

I have not seen any engine on the site designed and built correctly, they all have too high compression ratio for the boost and fuel being used. What this means is the ignition advance has to be retarded, so the combustion is no longer taking place in the cylinder head but down in the cylinder bores, putting much more heat into the water jacket and oil.

My new engine build is going to have heaters in the dry sump tank to get the temperature up to around 150c, much better there than being too cold.
