Jacking MK2 by 4 axle stands (no wheels)

Post by Marlowe »

Afternoon folks. Quick question - taking my stock rev 2 wheels in to be refurbed tomorrow. I've got 4 axle stands and a jack. I need the car as I'm up against it timewise and need to replace the drop links this week ahead of a driving hol over the bank holiday.

What's the best way of supporting the chassis on 4 axle stands?

Wary of using the traditional points on the sills as while they seem solid when having jacked in the past, I've never had the whole car just supported by them.

I know I could get away with two stands on the rear sub frame, but unsure where's safe to use on the front.

I've got two wooden ramps I can put under the sills as a 'just in case' if I'm really unlucky and the spare in the car but apart from this only the jack and the 4 stands to keep the car up while the wheels are done.

Cheers. :)

The jack points on the sills should be fine. I'd rather that than use the subframe, but that's just me.

Also, I'd support the front first then jack the back up using the sub-frame and slot the rear axle stands in place. Use blocks :thumleft:

The jacking points on the sills are designed to be used with the standard scissor jack, I definitely wouldn't use them to support the car on axle stands as you'll damage the sill lip. Position the axle stands on the subframe inboard of the suspension arms.

I've put my stands underneath the ARB mounts on the front, it seems to be solid enough there but I haven't had it up on stands for any great length of time.

As long as you've got a block of wood or some card folded up, you're not going to damage the sill.

I always put my axle stands under the front suspension arms that go from the hub to the front of the car, it's a large round support so plenty of support and guarantees no damage.

Had the rear of mine on axle stands on the sills (jacking point) last weekend, but then I had trolley jack just off the rear sub frame as well. Got to be confident which ever way you it as your the one underneath the car!!
