Front calipers mullered?

Post by IanClements »

I've fitted new pads to my ST185 caliper's and had immense trouble pushing the piston's back in, basically had to undo the bleed screw and wedge a screwdriver in between the pistons and brake pads. They were both incredibly stiff and took about 15 minutes each.

It may sound obvious but do these need replacing? The car still brakes in a straight line but I've had a problem with poor braking for ages and I'm now thinking it could be these.

You may need to remove the pistons from the calipers, clean them & clean out the grooves where the seal & rubber boot sit in the cylinders Ian

You'll most probably need to buy a new kit of seals & rubber boots to reassemble them

I'm in the process of a similar job at the mo

Rust forms in the top groove, behind the edge of the boot and makes the pistons stiffen up

It can be a biggish job, perhaps you could refit your original single pot calipers while you do the ST185s

Presumably they are twinpot 185s ?

I can take you step by step through how I did mine

Single pots. To be honest the refurb kit is not worth the hassle as I've been quoted £72 per caliper, I think the refurb kit is about £50.

Mine are twinpots

Singles should be easier to do than twins

You shoudn't need a full refurb kit. Just a seal kit

A seal set for both my calipers costs about £28

Have you tried Trevor @TCB Parts, Brakes International or Bigg Red ?

Have you seen this thread ?

I don't have time to do a refurb as I'm going to Scotland on Thursday and now only have Wednesday night to work on this. Also I wouldn't want to buy a refurb kit only to find that the piston chamber is scored and not worth refurbing.

Since I put the new pads in today the one side is binding slightly because I couldn't push it back in any further, not much though, can still turn the wheel with my hand. I think I might try using a C-clamp to push the piston all the way in and then pump it back out, see if I can get it moving for a temporary fix.

Good idea

Perhaps squeeze in & pump out several times :thumleft:

Good thread this. My SC goes in for MOT this week and feel it's likely to fail on a lazy caliper. Don't use it much and know I've one that can stick. I have the twin pot calipers so may be looking at this again later in week, with a view to freeing it up with new seals or seeking out an exchange caliper.

Sod's law isn't it, the old man moved house last year and guess which tool didn't make it! I'm done for tonight, will have to order two caliper's tomorrow I think.

Anyone know a part number for the ST185's? When I asked in the shop earlier they were a bit confused and said there were a number of different caliper's for that model.

Should be able to find you a part number Ian

AFAIK there were two types of caliper for the ST185

Early models had twin pots, same as the ST165

Post face lift they had calipers with a large single pot

The single pots with the larger discs are mine. I managed to get CA1089 off the TCB website and the shop said they showed as Camry which could be right but couldn't tell which size disc etc, just need to be sure before ordering.

Late spec ST185 got the same brakes as late spec ST182: 275 mm discs and singel pot calipers. Shouldn´t be too different to find out wich are the right ones.

Original part numbers are:

47730-20410 caliper, RH
47750-20410 caliper, LH

Thanks guys, just ordered two new calipers. Luckily my local shop use Brake Engineering for recon's so the I was able to confirm the part number on their website - CA1089.

Just booked Wednesday afternoon off to fit them.
