Hi All
Working on and removing the engine from a MR2 Mk1 can be a real drag so the last time I needed to remove the engine from a Mk1 I came up with this modification! It certainly made getting the engine out with limited tools easier. The scissor jack that is visible next to the two bricks was my main vehicle lifting tool!
I have owned seven Mk1 Mr2s and this one was the most rotten I had ever seen! The underside was crumblier than a packet of walkers crisps and the wheel arches were made from solid filler.
On the positive side I managed to salvage the engine and loads of other useful parts that will keep other Mk1s going.

This is on page 76 of the Haynes manual.

It's a 1 spanner job and the instructions simply say "Detach the rear luggage storage assembly"

You can mock.
I've considered losing the boot section (but leaving the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay in place should I ever get the opportunity to build my "ultimate" mk1. Being able to lose weight at the extreme rear of the car would be a big benefit.

Do the race cars not make use of this space for extinguishers or anything?

That'd probably handle better than yours on your Jamex setup at least.
