GT4 Twinpots

Post by elbon50 »

Am servicing the early ST185 twinpots that I bought a while ago

One of the boots is split, so I need a seal kit

Also need pads

Brakes International don't have seal kits in stock at the mo

They list economy, premium and competition pads but only have the economy type in stock

For sprinting I need pads that perform at their best from cold

Where else could I try for suitable parts please ?

I modified some scoobie 93-97 STI red stuff pads from EBC - awesome, but I got them cheap for £30 as they were new old stock.

You'll also need the metal clips as well.

Are you sure you have ST185? Mine turned out to be ST165 calipers...The early calipers you have may end up being late ST165s

Very good website I found when looking for help for the metal clips, I signed up to the GT4 owners club too!

http://www.megazip.ru/ru/auto/toyota/vi ... 99#g367196

The above website also has all the part numbers for our MR2s as well :thumleft:

Make sure you get the right bits Peter as I didn't first time round.

Try Toyota for the seal kit.

Have you tried Toyota for the seal kit Peter?
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

Sorry to go off topic but how much work is involved in fitting the ST165/185 calipers?

I need to replace a front caliper on my mk1 and thought I'd check out upgrade options before making any decisions.

As long as you get the caliper brackets with them, they are a straight swap and bolt straight onto the MR2's hub, using the standard MR2 front disk. They even fit under 14" wheels

That is good news, thanks Mart.

All the eBay offerings look a little knackered, will have to ring round a few scrappies tomorrow and see if they have any in.

It'll still be worth getting the rebuild kits for them anyway mate. They hold a lot of fluid and you don't want them leaking.

You'll also need the metal clips that hold the brake pad firmly in. If you don't they rattle and make braking a noisy procedure. You can get them from brake int.

I got mine from Brakes Int at the time Peter.

I got mine around the same time as you did, so would have been a good idea to get yours then too ](*,)

Toyota wanted £20 for the mk1 caliper seal kit, so I doubt it'll cost a lot more, that's if they still make them.

You'll sadly need part numbers for all the seals, as you won't have a registration number or chassis number to give the Toyota Parts Department as some are very unhelpful and won't help you unless you have this at hand.

I always use http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html to search for part numbers. It´s a clone of the old Toyota parts catalog tool including USDM- and JDM-vehicles.

Yes you can, i invented the Gt4/Mk1 caliper mods and have had all variants of Gt4 caliper on my MK1s, the St205 calipers require the hub holes tapping out, the caliper holes drilling bigger for a bolt to pass through, and the St205 disc needs skimming down on its circumference along with the 4/100 PCD drilling into it, not really a plug and play option like the St165/185 calipers are.

What they will do though is put you through the windscreen when you brake, wheel choice is also limited with the St205s.

Could be good if the car has a huge V8 in it perhaps :-k
