Front engine 4wd MR2!... "El Diablo"

Post by stephano »

Right well the discription is a bit of a lie

:^o

Anyway i recently bought a rev2 sprint car off a friend who was a little hard up for money,

Image

i put it straight back up for sale and was offered this as a non runner (ran but not drove)

Image

So i went for it.

Its a rare lightweight wide body model that has no electric windows or sunroof and would have had a short ratio box but unfortunatly that was changed as it was knackered!

We towed it home with the Audi (engine running) and i got to work on it straight away

Image

bumper was off to tow it

starting the strip down

Air con and rads off

Dad kindly started ripping the carbon wrap off for me

Image

Thats it for a minuite will be cracking on soon with bigger turbo and a loom/ecu/injector swap.

I've always fancied one of these, never actually driven one though...I'll be after a test drive once you've got it road worthy :eye:

Thanks for the comments fellas

well the main plan is to have it running around the 300hp mark for werrington in a few months once its going i can crack on with getting the Banshee mapped and finishe for the 2014 season.
Then ill turn my attention back to this and go a bit stupid with it :thumleft:

Stole a turbo and dp off Dad today so that'll be going on it soon.

"Man fondles turbos"

GT28 would work nicely, as it gives a nice amount of power and great spool times. :thumleft:

+1- GT28 is a great start, from what I've seen of your approach it will never stay though...GT35 more likely

This is the turbo.

I also have a 700HP turbo sitting around, going to hide that now.

Similar spool to a GT30, maybe 500 revs in it? Nice power- that'll shift!

Yeah it will do for now.

Just have to wait and see what other turbos dad buys without a use for them.
Also looking for an ecu to plug and play for now till the mr2 is done.

Had a spare day to crack on with my car for once!

so first thing was get rid of the aircon pump
That was easy!

Image

Image

Had to take the alternator tension pulley off as well so not sure how ill sort that out yet, ill make something up

Image

while i was there i took the big fat cast cat off and started on the turbo and manifold

Image

turbo and manifold off

Image

ready for the bin!

Image

now this is where the day became real fun! \:D/
as yo can see on the far right of the head is a stud that is slightly shorter,
so got the stud extractor on it and yep as expected ti sheered right off at the head! #-o
thought while i was breaking things id try and get the middle stud out as well that was too long (half removed and left by the look of it)
managed to get it out but it took most of the thread with it

Out came the TimeSert kit!

snapped stud

Image

chewed thread (after running a tap through it)

Image

so drilled the stud out then got the timesert bit to enlarge the hole

Image

did that to both then put the counter sink in

Image

the insert

Image

all in done and ready for home

Image

next should be the loom and injectors changed for st205 with rev3 ecu then i can get the turbo on

yeah they are great! im tempted to take all the studs out and fit these in each one as they dont bind up to the studs with a bit of copper slip on.

cost a bit tho for a full metric set is like £450-£500
