[Mk2] [Turbo] Clutch starting to slip???

Post by joemacmr2 »

Hi,

Started to experience boost jumping up to max under load, with car not accelerating and revs jumping mostly in 3rd gear. Is my clutch on its last legs. Will it just start getting worse? I have a manual boost controller set at 14 psi.
What is best clutch to get for replacement since I have boost raised. Would own do the job or do I need to up rate? Also I have a leak from my gearbox, think its driveshaft seal

Sounds like clutch slip. It will get worse til it fails completely.

OEM spec. clutch like Exedy £150. Well up to the job.

If driveshaft oil seal leaking, replace when changing clutch.

This. Make damn sure whichever wally replaces the clutch changes the thrust bearing too. I am going to go all Bryan Mills on the mechanic that elected not to change mine if I ever find him...

How do you know if your thrust bearing is knackered? What are the symptoms?

If it breaks up, you'll know about it.

A feint whirring when clutch depressed is not abnormal - a loud whirring is excessive wear.

99% of clutch kits include the bearing.

Whirring that when you push your clutch down goes away?

Mine does this clutch and bearing changed within 1000 miles, I didn't notice it at first but it's definitely there.

It's a blueprint clutch and this isn't the first time I've read about them doing this I just didn't know the symptoms

I can hear the release bearing on 90% of cars that come into my workshop. Remember, your ear is a lot closer to the clutch than most cars.

The sad thing is the old clutch was only taken out because of the gearbox change. There was definitely no noise on the old clutch.
If you were to go for an exedy clutch kit would this cure the problem completely?

A Toyota release bearing will solve the problem. I've also never had an issue with any Exedy bearings.

So does the 150 exedy clutch come with a bearing? Is it the same price for an NA clutch? :thumleft:

Anyone ever used this clutch?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-MR2-2- ... bd9&_uhb=1

If so, it is decent or should I just spend the extra £70 and get exedy

National clutch and brake parts are OK. Made in UK and been around a long time.
