[Mk2] [NA] Axe, Dare, XXR wheels - any good or rubbish?

Post by CalMac »

As seen on Stanced-UK Ebay page - the prices are brilliant for the sizes and offsets available, plus all the wheels look really decent (BBS reps pretty much).

Are these best avoided though? If it seem too good to be true, it usually is  I'm thinking they might crumple over the first pothole, or lacquer peel within a couple of months.. Can't find any reviews of Dare or Axe on google so maybe somebody here will know :D

I've got XXR 521s on my car (were fitted when I bought it) and so far they've been pretty good. There is better to be had for sure but it all depends how much you want to spend really. They are nicely dished too, which aesthetically is very pleasing. Most likely the previous owner's motivation for getting them

Although I am sniffing around Rays TE37s again, as I did love my last set =P~

Magicbeans- Any idea how long they've been on the car for then?

They are so nice...

And Peter, that's what I thought! £500/600 isn't much for alloys of that size.. but at the end of the day I don't think I want to pay any more than that - have to draw a line somewhere

It's reckon for me it's got to be either these XXRs, a set of used staggered BBS (rare and expensive) or used AVRs (also rare and expensive)... =P~

Around 12 months old I believe, maybe a little less. :-k

A better close up photo. They are 18x10s though, so will be deeper dished than what many would have.

Yep that's what I'm after! 18x10 et.25 and 18x8.5 et.25, although I wish they did them in 17"! :(

They must sit perfectly with wide arches ;)

Beware 8.5 fronts as they have a tendency to rub on the inner arch. Mine has 245/35/18 tyres on the fronts (not my doing) and they rub on both the inner arch (on full lock) and the struts. They also tram-line badly ](*,) I'm just about to replace them with 225/35/18s instead, which is a slight stretch on 8.5" rims.

Just a heads-up :thumleft:

Thanks calum4492 :D

Yep thought that might be an issue! What size tyre you running on the rears? I'm worried about how much it's gonna cost when it comes to tyre change time

275/35/18. They're pretty wide

If you want to see huge rear wheels/tyres check out Gav's (Gavinda) car, it's insane in every way!

Not sure about Axe or Dare wheels but the XXR and Lenso wheels will be fine from personal experience.

haha 275 sounds good to me ;)

I'd be tempted to go with 265 and 225 on mine, just to try and keep the front-rear ratio sensible

I'm sold on these XXRs now, time to raid the savings pot :D

Watch the DriftWorks forums. A LOT of wheels pass through there, and you can pick up some nice used wheels for the kind of prices you are looking at.

several months ago someone was selling a VGC set of Work VS-XX in 17x8 and 17x9 for about 500 quid with a half worn set of decent tyres all round.

I'm dying to find a set of 17" BBS LMs, or XXR 521s or 530s, but sadly neither ever appear.

There was a set of staggered 8/9" with tyres on Pistonheads for a while, but can't see the add anymore. Were looking for £1200 IIRC. Might pop up again..

I'm not a big fan of 'knockoff' wheels myself but even some of the jdm manufacturers arent that great. My SSRs didnt last that long without getting bends in the rim and this was with crawling over speedbumps and constantly dodging potholes.

That said my advan rgs survived a curb clout hefty enough to burst the tyre only leaving a tiny nick in the lip.

A forged wheel will bend if hit hard enough, a cast wheel will crack or break with a much lighter hit, a bent wheel may cause the tyre to deflate, a broken wheel will cause the tyre to blow.
