[Mk2] [Turbo] Advise on buying a new clutch

Post by Luke820 »

Gearbox has gone so going to change the clutch while I'm at it what's the best one to buy for around £150 I heard the £170 exedy ones aren't very good? And I'm better off with the £145 one off cams kill?

the exedy ones are good, and i've not heard anyone say otherwise. They support up to 300bhp nicely.
Buy one.

Fitted dozens of "standard spec. - about £150.00) Exedy clutches and never had a problem. At least OEM quality, if not better.

Make sure you buy a genuine Toyota throwout bearing!

I just had a look at the clutch I bought from camskill and it comes with a bearing.

IMO I would put the generic throwout bearing in the bin. They have been known to fail.

My friend bought the same clutch it was recomended to him by Luke at pacific works because the bearing dosnt go he said stay away from the exedy organic ones because the Bearings are pretty awful, so hopefully I don't have any problems with it, my friends ones been ok.

Bought mine from TCB, works fine, holds "stage 1" torque just fine.

£88.35 + VAT

What clutch was this? I'm after a new one myself at the minute but I'm struggling to decide. Reason being: The car came with a paddle clutch, not necessary for the level of power i'm running (Stock rev 2 with a few breathing mods) but I still quite liked it, as it is literally just a weekend and very, very occasional commuting car for me.
I'm half tempted to edge towards another of that type, although I can't be bothered to replace it so soon (It didn't even last a year, although I don't know what brand of clutch it is if I'm quite honest.)

Not sure of the make, may have been Exedy. They make most OEM Japanese clutches anyways.

Well I took the advice of Luke from pacific works which I would advice any one with a mr2 to do I got mine back and it's perfect with the cams kill clutch depends what u wanna pay if u want to pay 250+ get exedy but i wouldn't recommend gettin a £80 clutch if the standard ones are £150 remember u get what u pay for!

I guess so, but my £80 standard clutch that happily stands up to full bore starts and 17psi boost seems to indicated otherwise.

I've used camskill clutches in the past too, on my Charade Turbo. They modify standard covers with upgraded springs and I found that worked just fine for a sportier clutch

So I'm thinking something like:

This might not be too bad for me. Way more than I need, but it hopefully will keep a similar feel. Thoughts?

Yeah, eBay is good for when you're specifically looking for fakes ;)

You don't need a paddle clutch at your power level. Why put yourself through the torture of using one when you don't need to??

Truthfully? Anybody that says they're difficult to use is a full-blown pansy and needs to toughen up. I'm absolutely tiny and I don't find mine difficult to use at all. I like how it feels (but as I said, I'm unsure of the current brand, all I know is it's a paddle!) ;)

I'd be happy to use a normal Exedy if there was any huge disadvantage, but I can't really see any.
