I don't mind paying for things if they are done correctly which I know they will be with the person that quoted this.

The above information shows the company doing the work has no idea how to build a powerful turbo engine.
The last thing that should be done is to lower the compression with a thicker head gasket.
What about all the head work needed when bigger valves are fitted?
Con rods for £320, they will be made in China.
What about the ECU and tuning?
I would keep clear if I was you.

The engine builder designs the engine and what is needed, the pistons are not "designed" to work with any other parts unless custom made.
A 0.8 or 1 mm gasket should be used depending on piston to head clearance needed and pistons made to suit

Must be comprehensive machine work, my sleeves were £400 to put in and bore.

Guessing the machine work will be a rebore / hone with torque plate, and head work to fit oversize valves, then possible head skim/ block decked, mains line bored, head port as well maybe?
I'd want to see a full plan for all the work they propose doing...

It's a rough quote which for the work looks fair. As mentioned you will need tuning and a stand alone ecu to go with it all. Add another 1200 perhaps minimum.

If its a track car, and your looking at those sort of costs, I'd be tempted to sell and either buy a car thats already had all the work done (seen a couple of decent race cars for sale recently), or indeed a completely different car..
I have a VX220 in addition to my MR2 now, and really, on a track, the VX is far more suited, would have lower consumable costs, and probably be a good bit quicker (turbo or supercharged versions) unless its a track with a long straights..
Just another option to consider if looking at ~£8k outlay..

I was thinking about this Rossco, but I still feel that my ownership of MR2's is not finished... I reckon a 500bhp track prepared turbo would see that OK.
I was looking at Caterhams etc but still don't think it's time to move on.
I love everything about the MR2 on track. They're very rewarding if driven correctly.
Is there a cheaper way to get to 450bhp in a MR2? Perhaps buying something already built?
The only thing about that is, what happens if it's been built to poor standards or is on its way out? At least if I built it myself I'd have piece of mind....
Ideally I'd have 600bhp R34 GTR but for now.....

I'm now looking to fully rebuild, but not sure if it's worth the effort and money doing it to a 3SGTE, or go for the 5SGTE.

Been in one that had 480whp. Felt amazing! Extremely sharp mid-range.
That's one thing about my build - it'd need to be sharp in the mid-range as top end speed in a track car is useless.
What turbo would suit?

FWIW I would avoid the barrel charge coolers- I've not heard of particularly impressive results with them.
As for turbo choice- there's a choice! You could have a read of my thoughts when I sized up my new turbo, might help you (last post on this page, but be warned it's a long post!!)

For sub 500 flywheel I would stick with a 60mm exhaust turbine, that way you'll retain decent spool and transient response, so choose from the following depending on how much power you want:
GTX3071
GT3076
GT3076HTA
GTX3076 / GT3079HTA
As for 5S or not...well if you can afford it and you plan to keep the car in the long term then I would say yes every time, proven stronger block- no more worrying about cracking a block as you're caning it round the track, and the extra cylinder capacity helps with mid range torque and spool.
